EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenceman Philip Broberg to an entry-level contract. Broberg was the Oilers first-round selection, eighth overall in the 2019 NHL Draft.
Broberg, 18, spent most of last season with AIK in the Swedish Allsvenskan League, recording nine points (2G, 7A) and 14 penalty minutes in 41 games. He also played eight games for AIK J-20 in the Swedish SuperElit League, posting eight points (2G, 6A).
The 6'4", 197-pound defenceman represented Sweden at the 2019 IIHF World Under-18 Hockey Championship, registering six points (2G, 4A), six penalty minutes and a +2 plus-minus rating in seven games, earning Best Defenceman honours. Broberg also played for Sweden at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, appearing in four games, recording one assist.
The native of Orebro, Sweden was a standout at the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Edmonton/Red Deer, posting four points (3G, 1A) and a +4 plus-minus rating. He led all defensemen in goals scored (3) and ranked second among defensemen in tournament scoring (4pts).
