RELEASE: Oilers sign five players to contracts

The Edmonton Oilers have signed five players to contracts: goaltender Mike Smith, forwards Alex Chiasson, Markus Granlund, Tomas Jurco and Jujhar Khaira

(Edmonton, AB) - The Edmonton Oilers have signed five players to contracts: goaltender Mike Smith (UFA, 1 year), forwards Alex Chiasson (UFA, 2 years), Markus Granlund (UFA, 1 year), Tomas Jurco (UFA, 1 year) and Jujhar Khaira (RFA, 2 years). 

Goaltender Mike Smith, 37, has just completed his 13th season in the NHL, appearing in 42 games for the Calgary Flames, with a 2.72 goals against average and a .898 save percentage. The 6'5", 220-pound goaltender also appeared in five post-season games for the Flames, posting a .917 save percentage and 3.20 goals against average.

A native of Kingston, Ontario, Smith has appeared in 571 career NHL games, posting a 243-236-68 record, with a 2.70 goals against average and a .912 save percentage.

Smith has also represented Canada internationally, capturing gold medals at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games and the 2015 World Hockey Championship.

Forward Alex Chiasson, 28, has just completed his sixth NHL season, posting a career best 38 points (22G, 16A), 32 penalty minutes and a -1 plus-minus rating with Edmonton this season.

The 6'4", 207-pound native of Montreal, Quebec has appeared in 454 career NHL games with Dallas, Ottawa, Calgary, Washington and Edmonton.

Forward Markus Granlund, 26, has just completed his sixth NHL season, posting 22 points (12G, 10A), 20 penalty minutes and a -4 plus-minus rating in 77 games. The 6'0", 180-pound native of Oulu, Finland, has appeared in 301 career NHL games with Calgary and Vancouver.

Granlund has also represented Finland at two World Junior Hockey Championships (2012, 2013) and two World U18 Hockey Championships (2010, 2011).

Forward Tomas Jurco, 26, played for Springfield and Charlotte in the American Hockey League (AHL), posting 27 points (12G, 15A) in 33 games, 22 penalty minutes and -3 plus-minus rating. The native of Kosice, Slovakia helped Charlotte capture the Calder Cup, with 18 points (7G, 11A), 18 penalty minutes and a +8 plus-minus rating over 18 games. 

Jurco has appeared in 201 NHL games over five seasons with Detroit and Chicago, posting 50 points (22G, 28A), 60 penalty minutes and a -11 plus-minus rating. The 6'2", 188-pound winger has also represented Slovakia internationally, notably at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, three World Championships (2015, 2016, 2018), two World Junior Hockey Championships (2011, 2012) and one World U18 Hockey Championship (2009).

Forward Jujhar Khaira, 24, just completed his second complete season with Edmonton, posting 18 points (3G, 15A), 43 penalty minutes, a -12 plus-minus rating in 60 games. The native of Surrey, British Columbia has been with the Oilers organization since being the team's third round selection, 63rd overall, in the 2012 NHL Draft.

The 6'4", 212-pound forward has now appeared in 60 NHL games, all with the Oilers, posting 42 points (15G, 27A), 105 penalty minutes and a -20 plus-minus rating.
