(Edmonton, AB) – Walking FORE a cause! Earlier today, the Syncrude Oil Country Championship presented by AECON unveiled its charitable component to complement Edmonton’s inaugural Mackenzie Tour PGA TOUR Canada event, the RBC Walk FORE Fort McMurray presented by Global Edmonton.
The RBC Walk FORE Fort McMurray provides participants with the opportunity to experience one of the premier golf courses in Western Canada, the Glendale Golf & Country Club, alongside Mackenzie Tour professionals during the final round of the Oil Country Championship, while raising money for the Fort McMurray region’s wildfire relief efforts. The walk will be an approximate 3-kilometre guided tour of the course on Sunday, July 31, 2016 with fans walking toward the final hole alongside the tournament leaders.
This past May 2016, Albertans, Canadians and the entire world were shocked by the devastation of the wildfires in Fort McMurray and across the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Those affected were friends, neighbours, family and colleagues, and our hearts have continually gone out to them in their time of need, making Fort McMurray’s wildfire relief efforts the ideal beneficiary for this inaugural RBC Walk FORE Fort McMurray. In the spirit of community, the charitable walk’s title sponsor, RBC, is committed to helping rebuild a cornerstone city in Northern Alberta.
“The long-term impact of the wildfire on the people of Fort McMurray is, in many ways, still unknown,” said Jeff Boyd, Regional President, RBC and title sponsor of the charity walk. “RBC is committed to doing everything we can to aid and support those affected as they recover and rebuild.”
The RBC Walk FORE Fort McMurray will raise important funds for the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF), who will direct net proceeds to Some Other Solutions (SOS) for Crisis Prevention in Fort McMurray. SOS helps prevent, intervene and support individuals of all ages who are dealing with life challenges. Through counselling, child and youth programming and 24-hour crisis support, SOS will work to ensure the people of Wood Buffalo have the tools and resources to cope effectively with crisis.
SOS was significantly impacted by the wildfire and have not been in operation since May, making this funding even more important to their organization’s work in the Fort McMurray community.
“The emotional, financial and physical support we have received from across the country, Alberta and the City of Edmonton has helped build the resiliency in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo one person and one family at a time,” said Alie Warnes, Executive Director, Some Other Solutions (SOS). “By July, SOS in Fort McMurray aims to be open and ready to continue to support every resident that returns home. On behalf of the staff and board at SOS, we are so grateful to the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation and RBC for contributing to the work required to help people grieve, cope, recover and rediscover joy in our community again.”
The registration cost for walkers is a $25 fee that will be donated to the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) and walkers are encouraged to fundraise individually with pledges of support, but this is not a requirement. The participant determined as the top fundraiser will receive a pair of tickets to an Edmonton Oilers game during the 2015-16 National Hockey League (NHL) season during the inaugural season at Rogers Place.
The RBC Walk FORE Fort McMurray is perfect for families, golf fans and casual walkers. Participants of all ages and fitness levels are welcome. In addition to a beautiful walk alongside golfers in the final round of the Syncrude Oil Country Championship presented by AECON, all participants will receive:
- Special RBC Walk FORE Fort McMurray presented by Global Edmonton T-shirt
- $10 Running Room voucher
- BBQ with non-alcoholic beverage
