PRE-GAME REPORT

EDMONTON, AB - It's always a show when Ovi is in town.
The Oilers will welcome the greatest goal scorer of the generation to Rogers Place as they try to win their third-straight game.
"They've been a real good team for a long time," Connor McDavid said about the matchup. "They got lots of great players on that side and when they're playing well, it's a difficult night. We got to be ready."
The Oilers last played the Capitals back on November 7, with the Washington side picking up the 5-4 win back in D.C.. In that contest, Alexander Ovechkin surpassed Gordie Howe for the NHL record for goals scored with a single team. The Russian sniper has potted 13 markers in his first 25 contest and his 793 career goals trails Howe by eight for second all-time in NHL history.
"I mean that's pretty remarkable," McDavid said after morning skate. "Obviously Gordy Howe, just say his name and know what it means to the game of hockey and he's about to pass him. It's a credit to him and credit to everything that he's done and accomplished and a pretty amazing feat."

DEPTH STEPPING UP

The Capitals have been dealing with a myriad of injuries this season with top players like John Carlson, TJ Oshie, Niklas Backstrom, Dimitri Orlov, and Tom Wilson missing time this year.
The injury bug bit again on Saturday, when starting goaltender Darcy Kuemper left their contest against the Calgary Flames with an upper-body injury. Kuemper and his lifetime 10-2-4 record vs. the Oilers did not skate prior to Monday's game and is likely out of the lineup for the contest.
It's an issue that McDavid and the Oilers, who have been without several top-nine forwards over the last few weeks, know plenty about this season.
"We're a little banged up too, obviously. It seems to be that time of year for a couple of teams and they've been dealing with it all year and we played them banged up in Washington," he said. "They found a way to get a win so we definitely owe them a game here in our house."
Edmonton has been heavily reliant on their big guns over the last few weeks while recruits from the Bakersfield Condors have supplemented a depleted Oilers lineup. The AHL recruits have filled in admirably, allowing the Oilers to win four of their last five games.
"We've had lots of different guys step up. I look at Malone and Hamlin and Benny's back and we've had lots of different guys kind of step up and play big roles and that's what you need to do over the course of the season," McDavid said. "It's a long season. There's going to be injuries. It's always the case. You definitely need that support from all over the organization."
The Oilers Head Coach has liked what he's seen from the bottom half of his lineup over the recent stretch. Jay Woodcroft has seen contributions up and down his lineup, even if those contributions don't always end up on the scoresheet.
"We're scratching and clawing to try and find ways to win," Woodcroft said. "When you see Jesse Puljujarvi in the third period block a shot off a face off, that's a positive sign. When you see Devin Shore above his check working back to our end, that's a real positive sign. When you see Derek Ryan go out and make a play on the wall in the last two minutes of a game, that's a positive sign."
"I think there are ways while we're in this stretch, there are ways that people can find ice time and ways that they can help contribute to team wins," he added. "Not all of it just comes down to goals for, assists, that type of stuff. I think there's subtle ways that people can help, and with our injuries and with where we're at in our schedule, we need that type of continued effort and continued contribution."
The Oilers will have some added reinforcements in the lineup, with
Kailer Yamamoto expected to return
. The Oilers forward has missed the last 11 games, and 12 games overall this season with an upper-body injury. In his stead, winger Warren Foegele has been moved to the IR.
"It's been a tough first start to the year," Yamamoto said. "I mean, it's tough, but at the end of the day, you've got to keep moving forward, keep looking to when you're going to get back, so I'm back in the lineup now, I'm fired up and it should be a good one tonight."

PREVIEW

OILERS vs. CAPITALS
STREAM: 6:30 p.m. MT; televised on Sportsnet
Oilers Team Scope
The Oilers come into Monday's game winners of four of their last five games after a 5-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.
Edmonton was spurred on by a dominant performance by their Dynamic Duo of Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid. The pairing both recorded four points each on the evening, marking the ninth time they have both recorded at least four points in a game. McDavid and Draisaitl currently sit 1-2 atop the NHL scoring chart with 47 and 42 points respectively.
Stuart Skinner turned away 30 of 33 shots on the night to pick up his seventh victory of the young season.
The Oilers and Capitals are playing each other for the second time this year. Washington was propelled to a 5-4 victory back on November 7, courtesy of four powerplay goals on five opportunities. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored a pair of goals for Edmonton, while Draisaitl and McDavid added the other two goals for the Blue & Orange.

Capitals Team Scope
Washington heads to Rogers Place coming off the heels of a 5-2 defeat to the Calgary Flames on Saturday night.
The Capitals were lead by goals from Connor Sheary and defenceman John Carlson, while Darcy Kuemper and Charlie Lindgren combined to make 31 saves on 35 Calgary shots. Kuemper left the game with an apparent injury and his status for Monday is currently unknown.
Calgary was backstopped to victory by Dan Vladar, who turned away 27 of 29 Capitals opportunities to pick up his fourth victory of the campaign. Andrew Mangiapane paced the Flames offence with a pair of goals while Mikael Backlund registered three assists on the evening.
Washington currently sits at 10-12-4 on a season in which they have been hampered by injuries. The Caps have seen significant game time missed by Niklas Backstrom, Tom Wilson, John Carlson, TJ Oshie, Dimitri Orlov, Connor Brown, and more this year. However, they currently are 1-0 against Edmonton this season after picking up a 5-4 win against the Oilers at Capital One Arena last month.
Washington saw a star performance by Evgeni Kuznetsov who notched four points (2G, 2A), including the game winner. Former Oiler Dylan Strome scored a pair of goals and assisted another, while Alexander Ovechkin's marker allowed him to pass Gordie Howe to set the NHL record for goals with a single franchise.
