PRE-GAME REPORT

EDMONTON, AB - The Oilers and Avalanche last met on Sunday, with Edmonton exiting the Mile High City with a 4-2 victory - prompted by Connor McDavid's third hat trick of the season and fourth of his career.
Edmonton is looking to rebound after Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Boston Bruins. The Oil squandered a two-goal third-period lead. The dagger came with only 1:04 remaining in the game when David Krejci snapped the puck top shelf from the slot.
MCDAVID VS MACKINNON
The Avs welcomed offensive dynamo Nathan MacKinnon from injury on Sunday against the Oilers. The centre didn't tally a point in his return but exploded with four Tuesday against the Vancouver Canucks. The Avalanche overcame a 4-1 deficit to beat the Canucks 5-4 in overtime. MacKinnon scored the overtime winner, which happened to be his 100th career goal.
"His speed and his power, I don't see it very often around the League," said Oilers defenceman Darnell Nurse of MacKinnon. "He's a challenge, not only with his speed and shot, but he likes to play physical and try to bully guys around the offensive zone."
MacKinnon has one goal and seven assists in nine career games against the Oilers. He'll likely be matched up against McDavid, who has compiled six goals and 13 points in seven career meetings with Colorado.
"When you're around him even more, you appreciate the skill set he has," said Oilers Head Coach Todd McLellan, who's coached MacKinnon in the past. "He's not Connor fast but he's in that rangeā€¦ He's got pace, speed, shooting skills and a body that he uses to bully his way everywhere he goes. He's a tremendous player."
PENALTY KILL IMPROVEMENTS
The Oilers have been perfect shorthanded in their past three games, going 10-for-10 during that span. The club will hope to continue that success but it won't be easy against the Avs. The visitors scored five man-advantage markers against Vancouver on Tuesday, finishing the night 5-for-6.
"Five power play goals are something to note," said defenceman Brandon Davidson. "It's something we watched this morning and reviewed."
Nurse said the shorthanded units have focused on getting into shot lanes and imitating their penalty kill on the road, which sits first in the League at 86.6 percent.
"It definitely feels like improvements have been made," said Nurse. "We've been committed to getting in shot lanes. On the road, we've been strong all year but the focus is having that here on home ice."
Killing penalties can help shift momentum the other way, Davidson believes.
"We're trying to build off a good penalty kill and I think that kind of feeds into our offence," he said. "It's going to be put to the test tonight."
LINEUP NOTES
Pat Maroon will not dress tonight due to a lower-body injury, McLellan disclosed in his morning availability. Drake Caggiula will be sidelined as he deals with an illness.
The Oilers will dress seven defencemen and McLellan noted that Yohann Auvitu could see some time as a forward. The Oilers coach also said Jesse Puljujarvi could play on the left side.
McLellan also commented on the matchup for tonight: "The way Colorado is set up, they're getting a lot (of offence) now that MacKinnon's back in. We'll build our lines to play against that line in particular, which could mean Leon is up with Connor tonight and then we'll find a left winger over on that side."
The Oilers held an optional skate this morning. Lines will be made more apparent at warmups.
Talbot is expected to start in goal.

PREVIEW

OILERS (24-31-4) vs. AVALANCHE (32-23-4)
TV: 7:00 p.m. MST; Televised on Sportsnet One
Head-to-Head:
Tonight's game is the third and final meeting this season between the Oilers and the Avalanche and second game in Edmonton. These teams have split the two games this season with one win each.
The last time these teams met was on February 18th in Colorado, when the Oilers topped the Avalanche in overtime 4-2. Connor McDavid posted a hat trick in the win, while Ryan Strome scored the game winning goal.
Michael Cammalleri leads all Oilers players in career points against the Colorado (31), posting 14 goals, 17 assists and 22 penalty minutes in 36 career games against the Avalanche.
Oilers team scope:
McDavid is tied for fifth in NHL scoring, with 69 points (26G, 43A) in 59 games. He is one point behind three different skaters for second in the NHL and nine points back of Nikita Kucherov in the Art Ross Trophy race.

McDavid co-leads the NHL in scoring in February, having posted 15 points (11G, 4A), in 10 games, tied with Evgeni Malkin (7G, 8A). McDavid is first in the NHL in even strength points this season with 52.
Leon Draisaitl has points in four of his last six games (three goals, six points) and 12 of his last 16 (6 goals, 20 points). Draisaitl leads the NHL in even strength assists with 32, tied with Calgary's Johnny Gaudreau.
Avalanche team scope:
The Avalanche are three points back of Minnesota for the final Wild Card position in the Western Conference with 68 points on the season. They have struggled recently with only five wins in their last 13 games (5-7-1). Their current stretch comes after they won 10 in a row to get themselves into a playoff position.
Nathan MacKinnon leads the way for Colorado with 65 points despite only having played in 51 games. MacKinnon is also first on the team in goals with 25. Goaltender Semyon Varlamov has a goals-against average of 2.87 and save percentage of .912 in 33 games played as he's split crease duties with Jonathan Bernier, who is currently on the shelf with a concussion.
Andrew Hammond is serving as backup to Varlamov but he's yet to play a game with Varlamov carrying the load since Bernier's injury on February 16.
By the Numbers:
Colorado has almost twice as many points as they had at this time last year. With 68 points through 59 games, in 2016-17, they had only 35 points over the same stretch (16-40-3). The Avs finished last season with 48 points.
McDavid has five goals in two games against Colorado this season after having only scored once in five tries prior to the current campaign.
Tyson Barrie has six goals and 15 points in 15 career games against the Oilers.
Injury Report:
OILERS - Andrej Sekera (Upper Body) is questionable; Al Montoya (Upper Body) is probable to return after the Oilers sent down Brossoit on Wednesday; Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Cracked Ribs) is out; Patrick Maroon (Undisclosed) is day-to-day.
