PRE-GAME REPORT

LAS VEGAS, NV - The Mullett Arena was certainly a scrappy place to earn two points.
Looking to get back into the win column on Monday against the Arizona Coyotes ahead of tonight's rematch with the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena, the Oilers came away from the Coyotes' Den located on campus at Arizona State University with a 5-4 victory, but it wasn't without its scrapes and scratches.
"It felt a little different in that building, but we said this morning that it didn't matter where we played the game," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said. "It was more about trying to find a way to win the game and get two points in a tough building versus a team that's only lost one time [at home] in regulation in their last ten."
The Oilers traded chances with an eager and energetic Arizona side in the opening frame and found goals on the power play, at even strength and shorthanded from Zach Hyman, Evan Bouchard and Darnell Nurse to lead 3-2 through 20 minutes before Leon Draisaitl's 300th career NHL goal with five-and-a-half to go in the second period had Edmonton ahead by a pair.
"I actually thought that was our best period by far," Woodcroft said of the middle frame. "I thought we went into it with the psychology of defending hard and defending first, and I think we have to continue that."
However, that approach for Woodcroft and the Oilers did not continue into the final frame. Just like how the fans feel on top of the ice at Mullett Arena with their proximity to the ice, Arizona got on top of Edmonton in the first five minutes of the third period.
"I thought there were a couple of shifts in the third and they made us pay," Woodcroft said. "I thought we could've been harder around our own net, and there were just a couple of individual situations that can be handled better."

POST-RAW | Jay Woodcroft 03.27.23

Matias Maccelli and Barrett Hayton struck twice in 58 seconds to tie things up 4-4 and leave Edmonton the task of escaping the 4,600-seat arena, where Arizona was 20-11-4 this season prior to Monday, with the two points thanks to more heroics with the man advantage.
"You knew they were going to come in the third," Hyman said. "They kind of had us hemmed in on a few shifts and we lost our momentum, so that was tough, but you weather the storm and get some big special teams, big power-play goals, and that changes the game."
The Oilers power play needed only six seconds to answer back for Maccelli's first-period goal on its first look, and it made the most of another opportunity in the third that started as a 5-on-3 for eight seconds when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins cleaned up the rebound off Bouchard's hard point shot with 7:55 remaining for his 34th of the season, 91st point and the night's eventual game-winner.

POST-RAW | Zach Hyman 03.27.23

"Special teams obviously played a big factor in it," Hyman said. "Obviously we thought we had a really strong second and we were up 4-2 going into the third and let it slip away, but we were able to find a way to get it back and win the game, so that's all that matters. But obviously, you want to clean that up."
"It's not a perfect game, but we walked out with two points and we'll take it," Woodcroft added.

L300N

There goes the NHLPA's best passer, scoring the 300th goal of his career.
"Yeah, I think I voted for him on that," Bjugstad said. "I wouldn't contest. He's definitely an unbelievable talent. I'm just excited to be in the same room as him."
Draisaitl's special blend of point-point passing with an innate ability to score goals is deserving of a title reserved for only a handful (or even just a pair) of players in the NHL.
"Pass-first 50-goal scorer," Hyman described. "He's one of the few. I think Connor's right up there too."
The German's unassisted goal in the second period of Monday's meeting with the Coyotes at Mullett Arena was the 300th of his NHL career and the 46th goal of a 2022-23 campaign for Draisaitl where he's already set a new career that's steadily growing -- now up to 114 points in 72 games.

POST-RAW | Nick Bjugstad 03.27.23

Draisaitl showed his quick reactions with the 'Burger Flipper' by sneaking a quick one-timer past Vejmelka, who seemed to be caught off guard by the effort thanks to traffic and the deceptive look of the puck coming off his tape.
"I think it's a quick release. His blade is different," Bjugstad said. "I don't know, I'm not a goalie, but just looking at his blade it looks like it's coming off different than most guys. No one really uses a stick like him in the NHL, so I feel like he gets it off quick and he's a cerebral player. He's in the right spots and they're always able to find him on the power play, and that's a good player there."
Further to that milestone, a goal and assist for Draisaitl on Mondau keeps his point streak going at nine games, including five tallies and 12 helpers.
"I saw someone grab the puck and I said 'what milestone was that?' because he's had a lot of them," Bjugstad said. "300 is a lot of goals for the kid, and many more to come. He's an unbelievable player and great person, so you like being on the same side as these guys [McDavid and Draisaitl] and he came up big with that."

OILERS vs. GOLDEN KNIGHTS
WATCH: 8:00 p.m. MT; televised on Sportsnet One
Oilers Team Scope
Leon Draisaitl netted his 300th NHL goal while Connor McDavid had an assist to reach 140 points in a 5-4 win for the Oilers over Arizona at Mullett Arena on Monday.
Draisaitl scored unassisted in the second period for his 46th goal of the season as part of a multi-point game for the German, who's tracking to record the third 50-goal campaign of his career while already setting a new career high this season with 114 points.
McDavid became the 10th player in NHL history with a 140-point season and the first with at least 140 points since Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr in 1995-96 with the Pittsburgh Penguins, while also becoming the seventh with at least 60 goals and 80 assists in a season.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
and
Evan Bouchard
each had a goal and an assist to help extend Edmonton's point streak to seven games (6-0-1) and shorten the gap between themselves and the Los Angeles Kings for second in the Pacific Division to three points. A win on Tuesday in Vegas would pull them within three points of the division lead.
Golden Knights Team Scope
Vegas has won four straight games and eight of their last nine after defeating Edmonton 4-3 in overtime on Saturday at Rogers Place.
At the end of a long Oilers shift with players like Mattias Ekholm hemmed into Edmonton's end for close to two minutes, Nicolas Roy tucked home his own rebound on the second effort to secure the Golden Knights the extra point 2:26 into overtime.
"I thought we kept them to the outside until that last play that they scored on," Ekholm said. "Obviously, that is what we are tying to do in overtime, is to keep them out there and keep our guys fresh and get some changes on them, but obviously they managed to do it with us that time."
Vegas (46-21-6) now have 98 points and will look to reach 100-point mark for first time since inaugural season and increase their hold on top spot in the Pacific with a win on home ice.
