PRE-GAME REPORT

CALGARY, AB - With everything that's transpired between these two provincial rivals over the past 12 months, trying to determine how tonight's game will unfold is a fool's errand.
"I've long given up trying to predict what's going to happen in the Battle of Alberta," Head Coach Jay Woodcroft said.
Saturday's meeting between the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames will be the next installment of the fierce provincial rivalry and the second of only three meetings this regular season after the two foes met in the second round of last season's Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Red & Yellow downed the Blue & Orange back at Rogers Place exactly two weeks ago to gain the first advantage over their provincial rivals this season, so the Oilers already have revenge on their mind.
It's not that they needed any further motivation, however.
"We've only got three games against them this year and the first two are out of the way early," forward Evander Kane said. "Obviously, they've got off to a great start. They beat us in our building last time and we'll look to return that favour."
Calgary still poses the same type of threat the Oilers became accustomed to i nthe playoffs after some off-season shuffling, including the additions of some talented players in forwards Jonathan Huberdeau, Nazem Kadri and defenceman Mackenzie Weegar.
"There are a lot of similarities to last year," defenceman Darnell Nurse said of the Flames. "They play hard, and any time we come to this building, it's a tough test and they're a good team. So for us to get a provincial rival, you get up for it, but it's just going to be two good hockey teams going out there and playing."
Kadri scored against Edmonton on the powerplay in a four-goal first period for Calgary last time these two sides met at Rogers Place on Oct. 15.
It was a first period to forget for the Oilers in a 4-3 defeat, but also, one to learn from.
"I think if we play the way we did after the first period, we should be able to have some success," Kane said. "Obviously, our start was nowhere near where it needed to be. When you give a team four goals in the first 21 minutes of the game, it's not a recipe for success, especially against these guys. We know we're going to have a good start, especially in this building.
"We know how games have gone against each other over the last twelve months here. There have been some entertaining, strange moments, and I'm sure there'll be a few of those tonight."

The Oilers can close out their first road trip a perfect 3-0-0 and stretch their win streak to four games with a victory at the Scotiabank Saddledome over a Flames side that's won five of their six contests this season and two in a row over the Carolina Hurricanes and Pittsburgh Penguins.
Both sides are among the Pacific Division's early leaders with 10 points apiece, though Calgary has two games in hand on Edmonton. The Flames have settled in at home into an eight-game homestand, winning four out of five at the Scotiabank Saddledome, while Edmonton has been steadily building their game up after a slow start to their year in the first three games by their own standards.
"I've thought that we've got a little bit better each and every day, and that's what we've set out to do," Woodcroft said. "We quite understand that we're not a finished product right now. We're a work in progress and we've challenged our guys with getting a little bit better each day, and I think we've done that.
"I think if you look at the macro picture of our first eight games or so, there's been some good moments and then there's been moments that we want to have back. What we're searching for is a measure of consistency about our game."
CAMA-ROAD-ERIE
There's no place like home, but the road is where relationships are built.
The Oilers enjoyed the experience of beginning their season with six games at home, finishing with three wins and three losses, before departing on their first road trip through St. Louis, Chicago, and now Calgary.
The first road trip is always foundational to the team gelling as a single unit with players, coaches and staff learning more about each other in the locker room, on the bus and plane, or out at team dinners in different cities
"I think what happens when you go on the road is that it brings people together," Woodcroft said. "We love playing in front of our fans. We've got the best fans, we got the best arena in the National Hockey League and we love playing in front of them, but I think when you go out on the road, the group comes together."
So far, Coach Woodcroft has liked what he's seen from every one of his players as they continue to evolve their identity as a team and figure out who they are, both individually and collectively.
"I think our teams played well here on the road," Woodcroft said. "We had a long homestand, but it was nice to get out and get the fellas together. We've won two games in two different fashions, but tonight's going to be a whole different animal in the Calgary Flames."

PRE-RAW | Darnell Nurse 10.29.22

Edmonton's last three wins have all come in different fashions, including the sweep of a back-to-back against the St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks. The Oilers downed the Blues on Wednesday in a tight-checking 3-1 affair before Thursday night's action-packed 6-5 win over the Chicago Blackhawks required them to battle through the emotions and score a late goal through Leon Draisaitl to take the two points.
The team has banded together early through some tough games -- a camaraderie that can help in the long run, especially when established in the early days of the regular season.
"I think we've found different ways to win. I think that's important, especially early in the season where you're still getting the kinks and whatnot out of your game," Nurse added. "But we've found ways to win tight-checking games and we've found ways to win games that are wide open. I think for us, we want to dictate more so having a stronger presence from start to finish and not opening up. But with that said, we found ways to win those games."
The job's far from done, however, with the biggest challenge for the Oilers to complete the perfect road trip coming tonight against a fierce rival.
"The road can be tough, and if you're able to find ways to have success on the road and collect points on the road, it's a big testament to the group," Woodcroft said. "It's a big game for us and we want to finish it off the right way."
LINEUP NOTES
It's Stuart Skinner's net tonight in Calgary after the 23-year-old was in the starter's net for the Oilers at this morning's skate.
Skinner will get the nod against Edmonton's provincial rival after stopping 88-of-92 shots so far this season with a .957 save percentage and 1.44 goals-against average through three appearances - including a 31-save relief appearance against the Flames two weeks ago.
When asked why he made the decision to go with Skinner tonight in the Battle of Alberta, Woodcroft gave his simple and to-the-point answer: "I think he has a chance to help us win the game."

PRE-RAW | Jay Woodcroft 10.29.22

Skinner made 37 saves on 38 shots in an impressive showing against the St. Louis Blues during his last start this past Wednesday and looks poised to build on that momentum to Edmonton's benefit.
With the decision to start Skinner tonight, Woodcroft brought up the faith the team has in both of their netminders and how both understand there's plenty of playing time ahead in the remaining 74 games of the regular season.
"Jack has a clear understanding of our belief in both of our goaltenders," he said. "We just want to make sure that we're keeping both up and running here and playing enough games. We don't want to overuse anybody, we just want to make sure that people are up and running."
"I think we have two quality goaltenders. I think we're finding different ways to win with both, and I feel good about both of them."

PREVIEW

OILERS vs. FLAMES
STREAM: 8:00 p.m. MT; televised on Sportsnet One and CBC
Oilers Team Scope
Edmonton is looking to go a perfect three-for-three on their first road trip of the season with an early season rematch against the Flames.
The Oilers are coming off a wild night in Chicago where a Leon Draisaitl goal with 38-seconds left in the game allowed the visitors to escape with a 6-5 victory.
Connor McDavid continued his early season dominance, notching his second hat trick in the season's first eight games. The Oilers captain is currently tied for second in the NHL in points with teammate Leon Draisaitl, with both forwards scoring 15 points in the first eight games.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has also seen an offensive resurgence since being elevated to the top-six, notching 10 points in his last five games. In net, Jack Campbell picked up his fourth win of the season, stopping 31 of 36 Blackhawks shots. Chicago was given plenty of chances to get pucks on the Oilers goaltender, courtesy of 10 powerplay opportunities.
When it comes to their opponent on Saturday, the two teams last met up at Rogers Place back on October 15, with the Flames escaping with a 4-3 victory on the evening. All four of Calgary's goals came in the first period, with Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner shutting the door after coming in for starter Jack Campbell. Skinner turned aside all 31 shots he faced on the night, while Dan Vladar stopped 26 of 29 shots in the win.
Flames Team Scope
Calgary hasn't hit the ice for game since their 4-1 win at home over the Penguins on Tuesday. In that contest, Jonathan Huberdeau scored his first goal as a member of the Flames, while Nazem Kadri continued his strong start with his new team netting two goals and an assist on the night. The Flames jumped out to a huge first period advantage in the shot department, outshooting Pittsburgh 20-6 and leading 2-0 after the game's first 20 minutes.
It was a bit of a different story in the second, where Pittsburgh battled back to the tune of a 21-4 shot advantage, however Calgary scored on half of their opportunities to escape with a 4-1 lead which they would not relinquish for the rest of the game.
Jacob Markstrom was strong between the pipes, shutting down 32 of 33 Penguins chances on the night. The Swedish netminder has yet to appear in the loss column this season, sporting a perfect 4-0 record for the 5-1 Flames.
Kadri has been the pacesetter offensively for his new club, notching four goals and five assists through Calgary's first six games. Defenceman Rasmus Andersson has continued to build off his breakout '21-22 campaign, starting the year with seven points in those six-contests.
Calgary is finishing off an extended stretch in the friendly confines of the Saddledome, starting the season with 10 of their first 11 games at home, with the only outlier being the first matchup between the two Alberta clubs.
