has had a whirlwind past few months. After being selected sixth overall by Edmonton, he was named MVP of the Super Series with 15 points in the eight-game series. He followed that up with a solid training camp that saw him land a spot on the team’s 23-man roster… Shawn Horcoff
quietly had a great pre-season. In four games, he had three goals and six points – leading the Oilers in both categories.SHARKS TO WATCH:
San Jose's rookie will have to wait another day to make his NHL debut. 20-year-old right winger Devin Setoguchi had an impressive pre-season with five goals and seven points in seven games. He fired 27 shots on goal, averaging almost four shots a game but will not play tonight due to an ankle injury. Taking his place in the lineup is Jeremy Roenick, who makes his Sharks debut… In a change from last season, the Sharks will start this year with its three top players on the same line: Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Jonathan Cheechoo… Centre Joe Pavelski had an impressive finish to 2006-07 with 14 goals and 28 points in 42 games and picked up right where he left off in September by leading the Sharks in pre-season scoring with nine points in six games. Edmonton – Ethan Moreau (ankle) will be a gametime decision. If he plays, he will replace Geoff Sanderson in the lineup. Mathieu Roy (concussion) is out; San Jose – Devin Setoguchi (ankle) is out. Tomas Plihal (shoulder) is out. Alexei Semenov (back) is out. Brad Norton (back) is out. FAST FACTS:
Since joining the NHL in 1979-80, the Oilers have compiled a record of 14-9-4 (.593) in season-opening games. The Oilers are 12-5-3 (.675) when their season opener is at home and 2-4-1 (.357) when the season opener takes place on the road… Heading into tonight’s game, the Oilers are unbeaten in their last seven home openers and last four season openers. Last season, the club opened with a 3-1 win over Calgary at Rexall Place. Overall, Edmonton is 15-7-5 (.648) in home openers through 26 seasons The Oilers have opened their season against San Jose three times and have won on each occasion. Most recently, the Oilers defeated San Jose 5-2 on October 9, 2003 in Edmonton.
