The Oilers started their eight-game home stand strong, defeating the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 Saturday.
"We needed that one," said Oilers netminder Cam Talbot. "Needed to start the home stand off right and that was a good way to do it. Had it not been for a bunch of big saves by their goaltender (Petr Mrazek), it could have been a lot worse."
Establishing a winning pedigree at home after the club's lengthy six-game road trip was a mandate.
"As a team, we wanted to really bear down," said Zack Kassian. "First games back from a long road trip always seem to be the toughest ones but we did a good job."
Talbot commented on the team setting the tone early in the match by playing physical.
"Kass got in, got a big hit early," he said. "Hendo (Matt Hendricks) knocked their guy right into the bench which set the tone early and we just kind of never looked back from there."
The Oilers continue the home stand on Tuesday against the New York Islanders.
