Lagesson, 21, appeared in 36 games with the NCAA's University of Massachusetts-Amherst Minutemen (Hockey East) this season, registering eight points (2G, 6A) and 28 penalty minutes.
"William's a big, stay-at-home defenceman," said Oilers Assistant General Manager Keith Gretzky on 630 CHED's Oilers Now. "He's a little older, bigger, stronger and he needs to play more games. This will really help him and his development."
The 6'3", 198-pound blueliner has accumulated 15 points (4G, 11A) and 54 penalty minutes in 63 career NCAA games in two seasons with UMass-Amherst.
Prior to joining UMass-Amherst, Lagesson played one season (2014-15) in the United States Hockey League (USHL) with the Dubuque Fighting Saints, recording 16 points (2G, 14A), 79 penalty minutes and a plus 18 rating in 52 games.
The Goteborg, Sweden native has appeared in 65 international contests for Sweden, most recently at the 2016 World Junior Hockey Championship. Lagesson also represented Sweden at the 2015 World Junior Hockey Championship, and was also with Team Sweden at the 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and the 2013 Under-18 World Junior Hockey Championship.
Lagesson was selected by the Oilers in the 4th round, 91st overall in the 2014 NHL Draft.
