Edmonton Oilers rookies will once again faceoff against the University of Alberta (U of A) Golden Bears in the annual match set for Wednesday, September 21 at 7:00 p.m.
The Oilers hosted the Golden Bears at Rexall Place last year for the first time in the game's 25 year history, however the venue switches back to the historic Clare Drake Arena for this year's edition.
Tickets are on sale now and available through EdmontonOilers.com, as well as at all Ticketmaster locations and ticketmaster.ca for $30 (plus fees), while game day tickets can be bought at the door for $35.
In 2015-16, the Oilers rookies were victorious for the second straight year, defeating the Bears by a score of 6-3. Leon Draisaitl led the Oilers to victory with a four-point night (1G, 3A), while Connor McDavid posted three assists in the win and helped improve the Oilers record to 12-13. Rhett Rachinski, Jordan Hickmott and Jamie Crooks tallied goals for the Bears.
While the history of the game itself dates back to 1988, a win for the U of A against the Oilers rookies has proven to be good luck, as the Bears have won a national championship title and a game against the Oilers rookies in the same season six times; coming in 1991-92, 1998-99, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2007-08, and 2013-14, while losses to the Oilers rookies paired with national titles occurred in 1999-2000 and last year in 2015.
Current Oilers that have played in the game since the annual tradition started in 1988, include Jordan Eberle (2008 and 2009), Oscar Klefbom (2013), as well as Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid (2015).
