The 6'2", 197-pound blueliner has appeared in 140 career AHL games, accumulating 38 points (8G, 30A), 42 penalty minutes and a plus 15 rating.
The Edmonton, Alberta native has also appeared in 10 career AHL playoff games.
Simpson was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the 4th round, 92nd overall in the 2011 NHL Draft.
The Edmonton Oilers have also placed defencemen Darnell Nurse on injured reserve.
