Oilers ready for another year at school

by Edmonton Oilers Press Release / Edmonton Oilers
Students and teachers are not the only ones heading back to school. The Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club is getting ready to go back to school as they start up their Oilers@School program for the second year. 542 schools, 45,000 students and 1,330 teachers signed up last season to partner with the Edmonton Oilers and the game of hockey as a teaching tool in their classroom.

“Introducing the Oilers into the curriculum gives student a fun and cool way to learn,” said Patrick LaForge, Edmonton Oilers President & CEO. “Thanks to our great partner, EnCana, we can spread the excitement of Oilers hockey throughout Oil Country with our Oilers@School program.”

Students in elementary schools all over Oil Country are having fun while learning their regular subjects in school through lesson plans based on statistics and stories from Oilers hockey. With new teaching plans for science, French and health recently added, this hockey based curriculum provides a wide range of interactive lesson plans that help engage the students’ imagination, while bringing more fun into the classroom.

“The sponsorship of the Oilers@School program allows EnCana* to continue to reach out to the communities in which we operate,” said Vicki Reid, Team Lead, Community Affairs, EnCana , presenting sponsor of Oilers@School. “The Oilers@School is a fun and unique way to incorporate the sport of hockey while working on projects in a variety of subjects from Math to English.”

Oilers@School is a hockey themed curriculum and a free online resource for teachers throughout Oil Country. This website offers projects developed specifically for Grades 1 to 6 and incorporates hockey with components of the Alberta Education curriculum in the areas of language, math, social studies, fine arts, science and physical education. Teachers have over 50 classroom ready projects to choose from with printable resources and graphic organizers available to help guide teachers and students.
