The patients at the Cross Cancer Institute were surprised today by a special visit from the newest addition to the Edmonton Oilers family, the Oilers Octane. Officially launched on December 14, the Oilers Octane have already participated in several community events around Oil Country, but today marked the first time the team made hospital visits.

Part of the Octane’s role is interacting with Oilers fans and performing at Oilers home games, but equally important is their involvement in community and charitable events throughout Oil Country. The Octane eagerly arrived at the Cross Cancer Institute today looking forward to spreading some joy to the patients and their families who are bravely battling cancer.

“My family, like many, has been impacted by cancer and to be able to come here today to learn more about the treatment, meet some of the patients and help to give them hope was very special,” said Whitney of the Oilers Octane.

The Octane spent nearly two hours visiting with the patients and their families. When the patients heard the Octane had stopped by, many came out of their rooms for a visit.

“It’s impressive to learn that Edmonton is home to the third largest cancer care facility in North America,” said Simone, OF Oilers Octane. “Part of the reason I wanted to be an Octane team member was to be able to give back through community involvement.”

Patients, nurses and the entire staff at the Cross Cancer Institute welcomed the Octane with open arms. “We were so pleased to hear that Octane wanted to visit the Cross Cancer Institute; we’re honoured, humbled and so gratified,” said Jane Weller, Senior Fund Development Officer at the Cross Cancer Institute. “This visit meant so much to the patients and families, I know it warmed a lot of hearts and brightened spirits for both the patients and staff.”

Although today marked the first Octane hospital visit the team will be visiting more facilities throughout Oil Country in the coming months. In addition to the Octane visits, the Oilers Hockey Team also makes annual visits to hospitals across the city.
