The Oilers Octane kicked off the week by helping to bring the Monday Morning Magic spirit to this year’s Capital Ex. For 35 years, Monday Morning Magic has been spreading smiles and joy on the faces of children with disabilities between the ages of three and 12. This VIP event invites children with disabilities and their families to experience Capital Ex in a controlled and safe environment, free of charge. Oilers Octane were invited and as community leaders, the girls relished the opportunity to help make the event special for all attendees.
“We ask local heroes like the Octane to come and participate in Monday Morning Magic and they come with everything they have in them. The Octane put smiles on kids’ faces and they bring something really genuine to the event,” said Jennifer Sheehan, Public Relations Specialist, Northlands. “The little girls and little boys think it’s fantastic, they get to have their pictures taken with life-sized heroes and it means a great deal to Northlands for the Octane to participate in this type of event.”
Not even the heavy rainfall could damper the spirit of Monday Morning Magic as the festivities moved indoors where there was plenty of entertainment for the children. Approximately 2,000 people enjoyed the morning with fun attractions including a petting zoo, bouncy castle, giant robot, rides and the Aluminum Show.
For one little girl in particular, spending time with the Oilers Octane was very special. Four-year-old Ainsley especially loved the experience. Ainsley’s Mom, Janice Myers, was thrilled to see her young daughter so ecstatic at her very first Monday Morning Magic and noted Ainsley’s enthusiasm to share her own dance move, ‘the wiggle’ with the girls.
“She loves it, not even the rain could ruin this day. It’s been a great experience for Ainsley,” said Myers. “Once she got here, she hasn’t stopped smiling and seeing the animals and playing with the balloons with the Octane has been amazing for her.”
The Oilers Octane made sure all of the children felt special as they greeted children and their families at the gates, mingled and handed out Oilers tattoos and stickers that the kids were excited to receive. Literally jumping into the opportunity, Octane member Lisa bounced around in the Monday Morning Magic castle with some of the kids as well.
The fun didn’t stop as after the fair, the Octane were on-hand to help serve up lunch, ice cream and high fives to all of the enthusiastic children. The kids and their families were treated to the popular Aluminum Show and the day was capped off with teddy bears for all children invited as Monday Morning Magic VIPs. The Oilers Octane too, felt privileged to be part of the event.
“This is my second year at Monday Morning Magic and it’s a very rewarding experience. I’m so honoured and glad that I got the opportunity to do this last year and, I’m so happy to be back for a second year,” said Octane member Adrienne. “Hanging out with all of the kids, their families and just to put a smile on their face, it really brightens my day.”
It was a special day for the 2,000 VIP guests taking in the excitement of Capital Ex, as once again the tradition of Monday Morning Magic continued with the Oilers Octane helping to spread happiness. A truly rewarding experience for all, Monday Morning Magic reminds us how powerful one smile can be as families and their children walked away with memories that will last a lifetime.
