With hard hats at the ready and tool belts by their sides, the Oilers ladies along with the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) spent the day lending a hand to Habitat for Humanity’s Stony Plain Build.

From walls to floor trusses, the Oilers Ladies and the EOCF helped frame a six-plex as part of a 12 until project.

“It is a lot of work, it’s a great cause and it is something that the Oilers Foundation and the Oilers Ladies are very committed to,” said Natalie Minckler, EOCF Executive Director.

“It’s just another way to give back and be a part of the community,” added Schoena Strudwick.

This is the third Habitat for Humanity build the Oilers Ladies and EOCF have participated in including the Blitz Build last June.

“Having the Oilers Ladies here is just so special. It just shows that the Oilers are much more than a hockey team in our community,” said Alfred Nikolai, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity.

The land for the single family homes was donated by the Good Samaritan Society as part of a joint initiative to bring affordable senior housing to Stony Plain. Four of the 12 units will be fully wheelchair accessible and designated to seniors. Habitat for Humanity has also pledged to build an accessible garden that will bridge the new complexes and the Good Samaritan Building.

The first six-plex that the Oilers Ladies and EOCF helped to build will be completed September 1, 2010 with the second six-plex scheduled to be done before Christmas.
