Oilers Foundation Leaves Permanent Imprint on Community

The proverb “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime,” can be used to embody the daily impact made by the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) in Oil Country.

With a focus on programs supporting education and health and wellness for youth, the Foundation upholds the goal of helping solve social issues and finding long-term solutions to help better the community where we work, live and play. Through the generosity of Oilers supporters throughout the 2011-12 season, the Foundation was able to contribute over $1.84 Million back into our community, furthering our objective of “changing lives” in Oil Country.

“The Foundation is humbled by the support that Oil Country fans showcase at every given opportunity, and without their contributions we would not have been able to provide funding to over 200 local charities this season,” said Bruce Saville, Chair of the EOCF Board of Directors.

Throughout the year, the Foundation raises funds through a variety of initiatives including WIN50 Raffle (50/50), Winner’s Choice Lottery, online auctions of Oilers collectables and special charity events, such as Rally Against Cancer, Shirts Off Our Backs and Puck Surprise.

The Foundation’s largest undertaking to date has been the redevelopment of Edmonton’s Inner City High School. Over the past few years, the EOCF has worked with staff and students to provide a new location for their school, funding for teacher salaries and support that has proven to be a success, as exemplified by record registration of 165 students enrolled this past year.

“Financial support from the EOCF is critical to Inner City High School’s ability to provide our students with the tools to break free of the constraints of poverty and marginalization, get an education and be on their way to becoming productive citizens,” said Joe Cloutier, Principal at Inner City High. “Attendance and retention has increased, students are proud and appreciate the support of the EOCF.”

In addition to granting high school diplomas, Inner City High offers youth help with everything including personal health, finding accommodations, personal counseling and medical care. The work at Inner City High is nothing short of life changing and, in some cases, life saving.

With the unwavering support of generous supporters, the Foundation continues to deepen its imprint on the community. Since its inception in 2001, the EOCF has contributed over $22.8 Million to over 2,700 charitable organizations in Oil Country. The work would not be possible without support from the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club, the Oilers Ladies and Rexall Sports Corporation owner Daryl Katz.

The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) is dedicated to “changing lives” in Oil Country through the support of registered charities that focus their activities on education and health & wellness for youth.
