Oilers finish home sked with loss

by Staff Writer / Edmonton Oilers
Nashville took an early lead after Alexander Radulov scored his 15th of the season. Shea Weber took the initial shot from the point that was turned away by Jussi Markkanen. The puck then went to Forsberg at the side of the net and he found Radulov in front for the tap-in.

Edmonton came right back with a flurry of chances on the next shift in an attempt to tie things up. Lupul had several attempts and Sykora as well but neither player could get the puck over the pads of Tomas Vokoun.

Markkanen made a nice stop about 12 minutes into the period, coming out to challenge Vern Fiddler and then kicking his shot away.

Mathieu Roy made a nice move to break up a potential Predators breakaway before firing the puck up ice to Patrick Thoresen for an Oilers chance going the other way.

After one period, shots were 12-10 in favour of Edmonton.

Six minutes into the second, Shea Weber blasted a shot from the right point beating Markkanen through the five-hole. The goal came on the power play.

25 seconds later, Ryan Suter's shot from the left point took a weird hop before sneaking through the legs of Markkanen. Bryan Young tried to retrieve the puck but it had just crossed the line.

A turnover at the Oilers blueline by Nashville created a three-on-one with Horcoff, Thoresen and Jason Smith. Horcoff tried to move the puck over to Thoresen but the pass was intercepted.

After two periods, Edmonton still had the edge in shots on Nashville at 20-17.

The Predators scored again early in the third to increase their lead to 4-0. Vern Fiddler's shot from low in the left faceoff circle zipped past Markkanen to make it a four-goal game.

On the next shift, Bryan Young did his part to get the crowd back in the game as he levelled Jerred Smithson with a nice open-ice check in the Oilers zone.

Five minutes into the period, Matt Greene and Petr Sykora had a two-on-one chance. Greene deked around the defender Timmonen then got the puck over to Sykora in the slot but his redirection went just wide of the net.

Jason Smith crushed Paul Kariya as the Predators winger was skating into the Edmonton zone looking to set up a scoring play. The Oilers captain caught Kariya with his head down and smacked him to the ice.

Markkanen denied Peter Forsberg with about three minutes to play as he dove across to knock the puck away from a dangerous area in the slot.

He then made another great stop, sliding across to stop Ramzi Abid on a one-timer attempt. Follow the save, sparks started to fly between the two teams as the players gathered behind the net to exchange some pushing and shoving.

The result of the play was two extra minutes to Ladislav Smid to put the Oilers down a man for the duration of the game. While shorthanded, Shawn Horcoff almost broke Vokoun's shutout bid with a chance from the slot but that was as close as the Oilers would get to erasing the goose egg.
