Hundreds of fans from across Oil Country gathered at Hudsons Canadian Tap House this evening, anxiously awaiting the 2011 NHL Entry Draft at the Official Oilers Draft Party presented by ATB Financial. The excitement in the room was undeniable as everyone wondered who would be chosen as the first overall pick and become the newest member of the Edmonton Oilers. Ultimately, Oilers GM Steve Tambellini called Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to the stage in Minnesota, causing the local crowd to erupt in cheers.

Over the past 24 days, over two hundred lucky winners won their way in to the event through various contests. Guests travelled from all over Oil Country to attend the exclusive Draft Party and to witness a moment in Oilers history.

Lifelong Oilers fan Derek Murray was excited to win his way in to the Draft Party, “The energy in this room is great, it’s so cool to be surrounded by fans like me.”

“It’s like all Oilers fans are a big family and this party is great to celebrate,” Kassandra Bury added.

Choosing Ryan Nugent-Hopkins as the number one pick did not disappoint and neither did the celebration at the Oilers Draft Party presented by ATB Financial.

The festivities kicked off at 4PM with appetizers served up by Hudsons Canadian Tap House and beverages provided by Molson. CISN FM’s very own Chris Sheetz hosted the evening which also included live draft coverage, goodie bags and lots of door prizes.

Edmonton native, Jay Zaal, was the lucky door prize winner of the brand new retro Away Jersey, the first of its kind in Oil Country.

“It’s amazing that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was picked and amazing that I’m the only other person wearing this jersey right now,” said Zaal. “It looks good and I feel good in it.”

Members of the Oilers Octane were on site and special guest Oilers defenseman, Theo Peckham stopped by to celebrate with fans and host an autograph session.

“The Draft Party has been great! Everyone’s having a good time, laughing and celebrating,” said Peckham. “The support here is the best and I’m looking forward to September.”

For fans across Oil Country, the countdown now begins for October 9 when the Edmonton Oilers open the 2011-12 season against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Rexall Place.
