The Oilers got off to a fast start in the game as Shawn Horcoff
took a drop pass from Ryan Smyth
while the club rushed into the Columbus zone. Horcoff's initial shot was blocked in front by Blue Jackets defenceman Adam Foote but he picked up the rebound and fired it past Columbus starting goaltender Fredrik Norrena.

A penalty to Alexander Svitov seven minutes into the period gave the Oilers their first power play and it didn't take them long to capitalize.
Shortly after going up a man, Ryan Smyth
picked up a rebound in front of the Blue Jackets net and backhanded it past Norrena to double the Edmonton lead.
Midway through the first, Jackets enforcer Jody Shelley knocked down Tom Gilbert with a vicious elbow. Coming to his defence, Mathieu Roy dropped the gloves with the tough guy.
Columbus looked to have scored their first of the night but after a lengthy video review, it was determined that Svitov had knocked the puck down with a high stick.
At the tail end of that same Jackets power play, Roloson made a big stop coming across the crease to stop Fredrik Modin after he batted the puck out of the air in front.
Late in the period, two unlikely combatants dropped the gloves in Rick Nash and Patrick Thoresen. The linesman got in between the two before either party could do much damage.
Shots after one were 11-7 for the Blue Jackets.
Roloson came up big early in the second, denying Vyborny on a shot from the left circle and then stopping Fedorov on the rebound in front.
Coming back the other way, Sykora almost made it 3-0 but Ron Hainsey saved the day for Columbus. Sykora's shot from the side boards made it through Norrena but the Blue Jackets defenceman Hainsey slid in behind and gloved the puck away just before it crossed the line.
Five minutes into the period, the Oilers did score to make it a three-goal game. Lupul rushed into the zone before dishing it off to Torres along the left wing side. Torres then found Ladislav Smid
pinching in and his shot beat Norrena for his first career NHL goal.
Lupul's line set up another great scoring chance as he slipped the puck over to Torres on a two-on-one. Torres fired his shot wide.
While shorthanded, Toby Petersen took a shot on net and Norrena had to be sharp to make the save. The rebound went to Marc Pouliot but he couldn't get enough of a handle on the puck to backhand it in.
Shots after two were 21-18 in favour of Edmonton.
Horcoff potted his second of the game early in the third. Smyth skated in along the left side, faked a shot and caused Norrena to stumble as a result. He then moved it to Horcoff who roofed the puck over the fallen Blue Jackets netminder for his second of the game.
Midway through the third, Zack Stortini absolutely levelled Columbus defenceman Bryan Berard with an open-ice check. The hit was clean but Nash came to the defence of his teammate and went after Stortini. Both players were given two minutes for roughing.
Several minutes later, Ole-Kristian Tollefsen and Jean-Francois Jacques dropped the gloves right at centre ice. The two went toe-to-toe for a good minute before finally calling it a draw.
Shelley blindsided Stortini from behind during a scramble in front, receiving two for roughing and a ten-minute misconduct. NOTES:
After the elbow from Jody Shelley in the first period, Tom Gilbert left the game with a concussion.
