The Edmonton Oilers have acquired defenceman Garrett Stafford from the Washington Capitals for left-winger Dane Byers.
Stafford, 33, has spent the 2012-13 campaign with Washington's AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears. In 48 games this season, the Los Angeles, Calif. product has recorded one goal, 21 points, 36 penalty minutes and a -5 rating. The 6-foot-0, 186-pound blueliner has played in seven career NHL games split between the Dallas Stars, Phoenix Coyotes and Detroit Red Wings, posting two assists.
Undrafted, Stafford played four seasons with the University of New Hampshire of the NCAA from 1999 to 2003. In 658 career AHL games, he's collected 93 goals and 366 points with eight organizations (Cleveland, Worcester, Grand Rapids, Texas, San Antonio, Portland, Hamilton and Hershey).
The Oilers had signed Byers to a one-year deal back on Jul. 5, 2012. The 27-year-old had collected six goals, 10 points, 144 penalty minutes and a -8 rating in 58 games with the Oklahoma City Barons of the American Hockey League.
