Oilers acquire defenceman Garrett Stafford

General Manager Steve Tambellini announced today the Edmonton Oilers have acquired defenceman Garrett Stafford from the Washington Capitals, in exchange for forward Dane Byers.

Stafford, 33, has spent the 2012-13 season with Washington’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Hershey Bears. The 6’0’’, 186-pound blueliner has registered 21 points (1G, 20A) and 36 penalty minutes in 48 games this season.

The University of New Hampshire product has played for eight AHL organizations throughout his career and has recorded 366 points (93G, 273A) and 508 penalty minutes in 658 career AHL games.

A 10-year professional, Stafford has played in seven NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings, Dallas Stars and Phoenix Coyotes, posting two assists.
