PRE-GAME REPORT

EDMONTON, AB - The Oilers close out the calendar at Rogers Place for the second year in a row against the Winnipeg Jets, with plenty of movement from a Sunday roster shake-up setting the stage for tonight's New Year's Eve clash.
Newly-acquired defencemen Alex Petrovic and Brandon Manning will take their places in the Oilers lineup on separate pairings to help reduce the stress put on Adam Larsson and Darnell Nurse that's risen from injuries on the blue line to Oscar Klefbom, Kris Russell and Andrej Sekera.
"I had them together last night when I went to bed, but the guy who's coaching had them apart and wanted to make them a bigger part of the group," Oilers Head Coach Ken Hitchcock said pre-game. "We're going to play them separately to try and make them a bigger part of the group. The pair of Nurse and Larsson have struggled because we've upped their minutes so much that it's exposed some things, so we've got to get more balance in our group."
The relief comes for the Oilers with the club marred in a five-game losing streak and poised to compete with a Jets team that's top of the Western Conference with 50 points (24-12-2) despite being vulnerable offensively as of late with only three goals in their last three games.
"We need to be better without the puck," captain Connor McDavid said. "It's on the forwards as well. Defence is definitely a team thing but it's not just defencemen or our goalies. We're a little banged up back there but I think this will definitely help. These five games have gone on too long, and we have to find a way to stop the bleeding here and get a win tonight. But by no means are we out of it."
The Jets have lost two straight and will be further limited with the omittance of defenceman Dustin Byfuglien, who was placed on IR for with an upper-body injury.
The Condors' leading scorer in Joe Gambardella gets his first shot at the NHL tonight in place for Kailer Yamamoto, who's day-to-day with an upper body injury.
"[Gambardella] is up from Bakersfield and he'll play," Hitchcock added. "Yamamoto has an upper-body injury and is day-to-day and won't play tonight, so he's out."
FAMILIAR STREETS
Alex Petrovic had just sent his parents back to Edmonton on Sunday after having them visit him in Florida over the holiday break.
A few hours later, however, he'd join them.
The 26-year-old from Edmonton's north side arrived back in his hometown on Sunday night for the first time as an Oiler after being traded and playing his entire professional career for the Panthers.
"It's pretty cool that I get to play in my hometown," Petrovic said to the media for the first time. "I've played my whole career in Florida and was drafted there.

"It is a quick turnaround. I've never been traded in my life and it's a different experience I'm going to learn from. Today I'm just excited to be here and I can't wait to get going and my feet underneath me. The biggest thing around here is to communicate and just get settled in.
Injuries on the blue line propel Petrovic directly into the fray as the right-shot rearguard aims to bring a strong defensive game to the fold for the Oilers beginning Monday night against an always-dangerous Jets team.
"I think I just add good value defensively," Petrovic said of his acquisition. "My main role is playing good defence and making it hard for the other teams' top players. I know down in Florida I played physical consistently, and I'm just going to bring that here."
Petrovic has 254 games of NHL experience, recording 49 points (5G, 44A) and one assist in 26 games this season.
REINFORCEMENTS DEPLOYED
Brandon Manning arrived in Edmonton on Monday afternoon from Chicago with an eye on making an immediate impact tonight against the Winnipeg Jets.
"I talked to him this morning and he was having his pre-game meal on the plane," Hitchcock said of Manning, who was acquired along with Robin Norell from the Blackhawks for Drake Caggiula and Jason Garrison. "He's in at 12:30 p.m. and will be good to go. He wants to play and we're going to put him in, so both guys including Petrovic will play."

PRE-GAME RAW | Ken Hitchcock 12.31.18

Staten Island, New York product Joe Gambardella was ready to board the Condors bus to for a road game tonight against the Ontario Reign, but those travel plans were quickly changed.
"We had just played San Diego the night before and we were getting ready to get on to the bus having a team stretch and the coach pulled me aside and said I wasn't making the trip," Gambardella said. "Initially I thought I did something wrong and that my body felt okay, and he said he was proud to announce I received my first call-up to the NHL. I've been on cloud nine ever since. You wait for this call your entire life and no matter how many times you play it out in your head, the way it happened yesterday I couldn't imagine it happening any better way."
Gambardella has led the Condors in scoring this season with 21 points (12G, 9A) in 28 games ahead of his first professional call-up.
"The last 24 hours have all been a big adrenaline rush for me. It's been a thrill," he added.
LINEUP NOTES
Goaltender Mikko Koskinen makes his 19th start tonight, and is 11-6-1 with a 2.52 goals-against average and .918 save percentage with three shutouts.
Apart from Sunday's shake-up, Hitchcock revealed defenceman Kris Russell is still not ready to return to action for the Oilers and will have to wait until the team arrives in Arizona on Tuesday to begin a four-game road trip.
Alex Chiasson remains sidelined after blocking a shot off his leg against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. Oscar Klefbom looks to be "three or four weeks away" from returning from a hand injury, along with Andej Sekera who remains on LTIR.
"Russell's injury has levelled off here, so he's not going to be available until we get on to the road trip," Hitchcock said. "Chiasson's better today but won't begin skating until we get to Arizona."
Monday's skate was optional for the Oilers, and the lineup will be made apparent during warm-ups.
