PRE-GAME REPORT

EDMONTON, AB - Les habitants always bring the excitement.
The task of snapping a four-game losing streak for the Oilers (8-8-1) will have its occasion tonight with a visit from the Montreal Canadiens (9-5-2) and their always-present travelling support to Rogers Place.
"It's a fun atmosphere," Oilers forward Drake Caggiula said. "We've got both sets of fans going back and forth and they have a pretty good following here. It definitely makes for a lively environment and these are definitely fun games to play, especially when you're playing an original six team."
The excitement of the dressing room is palpable, with the Oilers keen to capitalize on the energy early in tonight's contest against a Canadiens team that's been effective in the first 20 minutes this season with 20 goals - good enough for second in the NHL.
"Everybody's a little bit more excited, both fans and players," Oilers Head Coach Todd McLellan said pre-game.
"We need to get off to a better start. We'd like to play with a lead and haven't done it for four games. It's not necessarily about the goal, it's the input put towards establishing a direct type of game early that we need to get back to. We had it earlier in the year and we need to get back to it."
The Canadiens pose danger down their entire forward corps and into their defence with leading scorer Max Domi registering 21 points (9G, 12A) in 17 games and 10 points during his current six-game point streak. Former Oiler Jeff Petry leads Montreal's blueliners with three helpers in his past two games and 13 points (1G, 12A) in 17 contests overall.
"Speed and tenacity up front," McLellan added of tonight's opponents. "They score a lot of goals five-on-five and they are puck hounds. You might beat one but they have that next-man mentality when it comes to the forecheck. It's been very effective for them, so they've got it going right now and we've got our work cut out for us.
The Oilers are 2-1-1 in their last four matchups with Montreal, winning both of last season's contests.
CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM
If there's one person that has to put the nerves of the occasion aside, it might be Alex Chiasson.
The Oilers forward and Montreal, Quebec product has learned to tuck away his childhood Canadiens fandom when the Habs have rolled through town during his previous career stops in Dallas, Ottawa, Calgary and Washington.
"I think they're the enemy now, but if you asked me that question earlier in my career I would've been nervous and excited," Chiasson said. "Not that I get used to it, I still think its special playing against them, but I think over the years I've learned to turn the page and focus on the game."

PRE-GAME RAW | Chiasson 11.13.18

The Oilers as a whole need to focus on the little details and incremental improvements over the night's occasion, the 28-year-old says.
"What's important tonight isn't thinking about how we've lost four in a row, it's our quality of play, making sure we focus on the details, and I think we've lacked some of that in the last ten days. We just need to bring up our compete level, focus on how we play, and the rest will take care of itself."
COMPLEMENTARY CAGGIULA
Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid have combined for 86 goals since the 2016-17 NHL season, the fourth most in the league during that period, and Caggiula will be the extra cog tonight for the Oilers on that top line once again.
For the 24-year-old, it's a part he'll be familiar playing.

PRE-GAME RAW | Caggiula 11.13.18

"I think I've played enough with them over my three years that I know how to play alongside them," Caggiula said. "I've played with them as a full line and separately, and I think I have a pretty good understanding on how they both want to play the game. I think with my skillset I can complement them and give them every opportunity to have the puck."
Creating opportunities for the scoring duo will come from the same work ethic and tenacity that's helped Caggiula rack up five goals in his first 13 games this season.
"I just have to play the same way I've been playing all year - fast, hard, creating opportunities for those guys off loose pucks and keeping plays alive being that first guy in on the forecheck," he added. "Guys like Leon and Connor want the puck on their stick, and the more they have it the better they'll be. If I find ways to have them on the puck longer or create opportunities for them, they're going to make all the plays they can."
LINEUP NOTES
Netminder Mikko Koskinen is slated for his fifth start of the season tonight in between the pipes for the Oilers, expected to duel Antti Niemi, who's 4-1-0 this season for the Habs, in the opposing crease.

PREVIEW

OILERS (8-8-1) vs. CANADIENS (9-5-3)
TV: 7:00 p.m. MST; Televised on Sportsnet West
Head-to-Head:
Tonight's game is the first of two meetings between the Oilers and Canadiens this season. The reverse fixture will come later in the new year on February 3 at the Bell Centre.
In last season's two matchups between the two teams, the Oilers won both contests by scores of 6-2 on the road and 4-1 at Rogers Place. The Oilers have won three of the past four meetings (3-1-1).
Oilers team scope:
The Oilers are currently on a four-game losing streak, having lost in their return home against the Colorado Avalanche 4-1 on Sunday after dropping three of four on the road to the Washington Capitals, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Florida Panthers. Edmonton practiced on the holiday Monday in preparation for Tuesday's matchup with Montreal.
Ty Rattie registered his second goal and fourth point in the defeat to Colorado after having missed seven games due to a lower-body injury. The Oilers are 1-4-0 in their last five games and an even 5-5-0 in their last 10.
Based on Monday's practice, Draisaitl will reunite with McDavid on the Oilers top line alongside Caggiula, with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins dropping to the second line with Tobias Rieder and Chiasson. The trio of Strome, Lucic and Rattie occupy the third unit, while the fourth line of Zack Kassian, Kyle Brodziak and Jujhar Khaira remained untouched.
Canadiens team scope:
The Canadiens defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 5-4 on Saturday after dropping a 6-5 overtime decision to the Buffalo Sabres two days prior during a brief two-game homestand. Tuesday's visit to Rogers Place is the first of a three-game road trip for the Habs through western Canada this week against Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver.
Canadiens captain Shea Weber skated for the first time this season in Edmonton on Monday, but won't suit up against the Oilers as he didn't take part in contact drills. Top scorers Tomas Tatar and Max Domi will split duties on the top two lines, and goalie Carey Price is slated to start against the Oilers. Montreal's first-round pick Jesperi Kotkaniemi centres the third line with Kenny Agostino and Artturi Lehkonen.
By the Numbers:
The Oilers are undefeated (4-0-0) when leading after two periods, but have only been able to erase one deficit (1-7-1) when trailing after 40 minutes.
Draisaitl is the hot hand with 15 points (9G, 6A) in his last 15 games for the Blue and Orange.
The Canadiens are scoring at a rate of 3.3 goals per game this season, outshooting their opponents on 11 occasions so far with a record of 6-3-2 in those contests.
Forward Max Domi is on his second six-game point streak of the season, with 10 points (4G, 6A) during his current streak. Former Oilers defenceman Jeff Petry leads all Montreal blueliners with 13 points (1G, 12A) in 17 games this season, registering three assists in his last two games.
The Canadiens power play is ranked 29th (13.6%) in the NHL and has been cold as of late at 2-for-32 (6.3%) in their last nine games. Their road penalty kill has been one of the league's best operating at 85.2% (23-for-27) away from the Bell Centre, going 13-for-13 in their last three road games.
