Players like centre Cooper Marody knew keeping the intensity high and game plan consistent would pay off in the long run before a rematch with a much more skilled, determined Flames Rookie side.
"You pretend like it's a 0-0 game against a top NHL team and that's what we tried to do," the Brighton, MI product said. "It's tough to keep that for the full 60 minutes for a lot of people, but I think we did a good job at keeping our foot on the gas and not letting it get away from us.
"It's good for us but we know there's a good team in Calgary coming our way today and it's not going to be that easy. We did a good job at not building bad habits and sticking to the right way to play, and it worked out for us."
REDEMPTION
This Rookie Camp has given many players their first exposure to the Battle of Alberta and the ground that comes with it.
They're hooked, now.
"Everyone here is a competitive guy, and especially with the rivalry everyone wants it," centre Luke Esposito said from the dressing room of the Downtown Community Arena. "When you wear this sweater, Calgary always has a target on their back and the same for us to them. A win is always what we're looking for, and against Calgary especially."
