PRE-GAME REPORT
NASHVILLE, TN - What Trade Deadline?
It was business as usual for the Oilers ahead of their season series finale against the Nashville Predators, with each player hitting the ice for morning skate - despite it being the National Hockey League Trade Deadline.
There's much uncertainty on Deadline Day each year but within the Oilers locker room, the club is simply looking at maintaining some normalcy prior to their evening clash.
"It's such a weird day," said defenceman Darnell Nurse, who's set career-highs in goals, assists and points in the 2018-19 campaign.
"You're in the middle of a season, you have relationships, you're used to certain systems and then it seems like within minutes it completely changes."
Oilers Head Coach Ken Hitchcock said he is careful with the players on the day due to the elevation in anxiety it generally causes.
"It's nerve-racking for players," said the Oilers coach. "If you ask to have a meeting, people are a little bit nervous about why you are having a meeting, so you keep it pretty much at a minimum.
"This is a close-knit group, so nobody really wants to leave. If nothing happens, we're OK with that and will continue to move on and try to keep playing well."
PREYING ON THE PREDS
The task at hand doesn't change, however, with the Oilers looking to string their third win in a row against one of the best teams in the National Hockey League.
Nashville is second in the Central Division with 77 points and contains no slack in potency throughout their lineup, as the club has 14 players with 20 or more points and 10 skaters with 10 or more goals.
"These guys are one of the best teams in the League," said Nurse. "Especially at home. You look up and down their lineup and they have elite players everywhere that show up every night and compete hard.
"It's a big, big test for us tonight."
The Oilers are eight points away from the second Western Conference wild card position.
MISSING MCDAVID
For the second straight game, the Orange & Blue will be without captain Connor McDavid, who will serve the second of a two-game suspension.
McDavid scored the game-winning goal in overtime against the Islanders on Thursday then watched his club irk out a 2-1 victory over the Ducks on Saturday from the press box. Both the coaches and players know they have to put their best effort forward in the captain's absence.
"I think every player here knows that we got to pick it up," said Hitchcock. "We need your best and we're going to need other people chipping in."
Hitchcock believes the opening 10 minutes of the game will be pivotal for his club. The bench boss expects the Predators to come out strong in the first period after getting dispatched by a score of 5-0 on home ice on Saturday against the Colorado Avalanche.
"The worst thing that could happen to us was them losing here at home last game," said Hitchcock.
"That got their antenna up."
LINEUP NOTES
