PRE-GAME REPORT

EDMONTON, AB - The Oilers are in Winnipeg to face the Jets in their third tune-up of the pre-season, winning their first two contests including a 7-3 win over the Jets back at Rogers Place this past Thursday.
The Oilers top line of Ty Rattie, Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins combined for five goals and 11 points in Thursday's victory, but none of the three draw in to tonight's lineup as Head Coach Todd McLellan hands opportunity to a roster mixed with veterans and youth looking to make an impression.
"I'm looking for leadership tonight," McLellan said following this morning's skate. "It started in our meeting this morning and our skate with who's going to take charge in the room and who's going to set the tone. It doesn't have to be one individual, it can be a line or a group of players, so I'm looking for leadership, some execution against skilled players, where we are in training camp, and if we can we totally grasp some of the concepts we've brought in."
Goaltender Mikko Koskinen is slated to play his first full 60 minutes as an Oiler after stopping 16 of 19 shots in two periods of actions against the Flames in a 7-4 win back on Monday.

PRE-GAME RAW | Ryan McLeod 09.23.18

Centre Ryan McLeod gears up for his fourth-consecutive game this pre-season, giving the Mississauga Steelheads forward another extended look on a line with Kailer Yamamoto and the speedy Tobias Rieder.
"Every game I'm trying to get better, and I've played every game and I'm taking that as a positive," said the 18-year-old. "It's just another opportunity to go out there and prove myself, so I'm excited for another chance."
PULJUJARVI PRAISE
With a goal against the Jets at Rogers Place three days ago, right wing Jesse Puljujarvi made it two tallies in as many games this pre-season on a line with Jujhar Khaira and Ryan Strome.
Puljujarvi is the only Oiler goalscorer from their previous win that cracks tonight's lineup, and his linemates are among the first to heap early praise on the Finnish forward for his early pre-season performances.

PRE-GAME RAW | Jujhar Khaira 09.23.18

"He's a hard worker who works on his game on and off the ice," Khaira said from the Oilers dressing room Sunday morning. "To see a guy succeed like that and put up a couple of goals, it's good for his confidence and as a line it's fun playing with a player like Jesse."
Khaira, along with Strome, is looking to feed off the 20-year-old's energy as the Oilers prospective third line for this upcoming season earns more reps tonight at Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg.
"We're just trying to get better for him, I'm sure he's doing the same," Khaira said. "So if we can keep motivating each other and keep going to start off right it's going to be good."
A VETERAN EYE FOR TALENT
As a fellow centre and a veteran in the locker room, Brodziak will be watching McLeod a lot closer as the prospect earns his fourth-consecutive pre-season game with the Oilers.
"He looks like a player who knows exactly what he's doing out there. He's a strong player, a smart player, and up to this point he's accomplished a lot on the ice. I'll be paying attention a bit more, definitely.
"During the game you don't get a whole lot of opportunity to watch certain individuals, but from everything I've seen he's definitely making a name for himself and when I do watch he looks like a confident player who knows what he's doing out there."

PRE-GAME RAW | Kyle Brodziak 09.23.18

A veteran re-paying the services of veterans before him by easing a rookie's adjustment to the NHL can go a long way in the locker room and a player's career.
McLellan sees Brodziak as one of those leaders.
"I'm assuming in Kyle's first stint here as a young player when he initially put the jersey on there was somebody in that locker room that he looked to and kept an eye on that he emulated," he said. "Now he's doing that for others."
CRUNCH TIME
The magic number is 23.
Following the next two pre-season games tonight against the Jets and Tuesday versus the Canucks, expect the Oilers to cut closer and closer to that final combination of 13 forwards, eight defencemen and two goalies.
McLellan is slimming his squad to a manageable number early as pre-season progresses with the added urgency brought on by an end-of-month flight to Germany and Sweden.

PRE-GAME RAW | Todd McLellan 09.23.18

"Quite frankly, it's do-time now," the Oiler bench boss said of the time crunch this pre-season. "I don't want to say do or die, but it's do-time for some players. We can't keep practicing with six lines and 11 defence, it just doesn't work. With the number we're at we're far from workable.
"I'm hoping these guys sort themselves out a bit tonight and that we can make some decisions to get down to a workable number by tomorrow. We'll do the same thing on Tuesday and keep trimming from there."
Brodziak, who suits up tonight on a line with Drake Caggiula and Zack Kassian, echoed McLellan's urgency from a player's perspective.
"I think everyone individually wants to play their best game," the St. Paul, AB native added. "We're getting to the point where there's not a whole lot of time left before the start of the season and everybody wants to be on top of their game. Not only individually, but how we play as a team we want to dial everything in quick because there's not a whole lot of time left to work on our game."
