Oilers great Mark Messier is not surprised by Cam Talbot's rise up the NHL starting goalie ranks this season. "The Moose" joined Bob Stauffer on Oilers Now today to discuss a number of topics, and one of those was Talbot - a player Messier is familiar with.
"Back in 2010 when I was asked to manage the World Championship for Canada, I spent a lot of time with the Rangers goaltending coach talking about the goaltending position and how it's changed and what to look for as we tried to find some goalies for the World Championship that year," said Messier.
"I really learned a lot about the goaltending position and asked him a lot about Talbot and had many conversations about Talbot when he was in the minors with the Rangers. His comment to me at one point, way back when, was that there was only one guy he thought was faster post to post than Henrik Lundqvist and that was Cam Talbot."
Messier said he's been a witness to Talbot's work ethic and character.
"I saw the way he was received by his teammates - they like to play for him. He had all the attributes you'd want in a starting goalie the players would galvanize around. Let's face it, if the players don't like to play for their starting goaltender or they don't like the starting goaltender or they don't believe in the starting goaltender and he's not a great character guy, it's tough to win. He passes all those tests in every way and I saw that firsthand."
Talbot has been the busiest goalie in the NHL this season with the most starts (46) and has earned the third-most wins (26) heading into the Nashville game.
