Edmonton Oilers President of Hockey Operations, Kevin Lowe has been named an Associate Director of Canada’s National Men’s Olympic Team for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The announcement was made today in Ottawa, Ontario, by Hockey Canada President and CEO Bob Nicholson. Lowe was one of four executives named to the management staff for Team Canada, joining Steve Yzerman, Doug Armstrong and Ken Holland.

Yzerman, Vice-President of the Detroit Red Wings, will serve as Team Canada’s Executive Director, while Holland will join Lowe as one of two Associate Directors and Armstrong will serve as the team’s Director of Player Personnel and will be the General Manager for Team Canada at the 2009 IIHF World Championship.

The management staff will work with Nicholson and Johnny Misley, Hockey Canada’s Executive Vice-President of Hockey Operations, in putting together Canada’s team for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

This will be Lowe’s third Olympics representing Team Canada. He was the Assistant Executive Director of Canada’s Olympic Hockey team for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. Working with former teammate Wayne Gretzky, Team Canada’s Executive Director, Head Coach Pat Quinn and Director of Player Personnel, Steve Tambellini, Lowe helped put together a team of NHL players that won the Olympic gold medal for Canada for the first time in 50 years. A 5-2 victory over the United States in the gold medal final on February 24, 2002 saw Team Canada become the first Canadian squad to win Olympic gold since the Edmonton Waterloo Mercurys won at Oslo, Norway in 1952. He reprised that role with Team Canada at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy and was a member of Team Canada’s management team that put together the gold medal winning roster at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.

The Edmonton Oilers 30th Anniversary Season is presented in part by the Rexall Family of Pharmacies, Bell, Molson Canadian, ATB Financial and Ford.
