FIRST PERIOD

20:00: The puck droppped at 7:11 p.m. MDT.

16:55: Washington strikes first on a quick three-way passing play between Alex Ovechkin, T.J. Oshie and Evgeny Kuznetsov. Ovechkin feeds Oshie who quickly taps it back to Kuznetsov for the goal. Kuznetsov softly tapped the puck over Oilers starting goaltender Anders Nilsson. | WSH 1, EDM 0

13:59: A penalty to Brooks Orpik gives the Oilers the game's first power play of the night.

9:01: Oilers don't score on the power play but do manage to get back on even terms with 9:01 to play in the opening period. Benoit Pouliot's shot from the slot beat Caps netminder Philipp Grubauer. The play started with McDavid and Yakupov skating in on a two-on-one. McDavid made a great play to saucer a pass over to Yakupov but he just missed the net. Yakupov's second attempt to centre the pass out to Pouliot in the slot worked, however, netting the winger's first goal of the season. | EDM 1, WSH 1

8:28: Andrew Ference gets two for roughing, sending Washington to the power play for the first time on the night.

7:53: 36 seconds into the power play, Washington connects. Nicklas Backstrom gets in behind the Oilers defence and fires a quick shot past Nilsson to make it 2-1. | WSH 2, EDM 1

6:30: Shots are even at 6-6 almost three quarters of the way through the first period.

5:00: Taylor Hall's shot from the corner is directed off the stick of Rob Klinkhammer in front and past Grubauer to tie the game up once again. | EDM 2, WSH 2

4:50: Shots on goal are now 7-7.

20.2: Washington gets back in front when Justin Williams slides the puck across the slot to Marcus Johansson perched at the top of the crease for an easy tap-in. | WSH 3, EDM 2

0.0: Shots after 20 minutes are 10-9 for Washington.

SECOND PERIOD

20:00: Period two is now underway.

19:48: Only 12 seconds into the middle frame, Washington's Evgeny Kuznetsov receives two minutes for hooking, giving Edmonton a chance to tie the game on the power play.

19:24: Oilers score 24 seconds into the PP. Off the draw, Sekera makes a nice drop pass to McDavid whose pass ricochets in off the Capitals defender. | EDM 3, WSH 3

19:00: Shots are 11-10 Oilers.

13:43: Kuznetsov scores his second of the game, getting in behind the Oilers defence and slipping the puck past Nilsson to put Washington back in the lead. | WSH 4, EDM 3

12:37: McDavid takes a penalty for tripping. Washington power play.

10:34: Three seconds after the penalty expired, Andre Burakovsky pinched from the point and softly tapped in a cross-ice pass from Kuznetsov to give Washington a two-goal edge. | WSH 5, EDM 3

10:05: A penalty to Orpik puts Edmonton back on the power play to try and draw within one.

8:29: With 26 seconds left in the Orpik penalty, Hall is upended but inexplicably is called for a holding the stick penalty on the play.

8:11: With both teams playing four-on-four, Matt Niskanen feeds Williams to make it 6-3. That goal marks the end of the night for Anders Nilsson. Nilsson allowed six goals on 17 shots. | WSH 6, EDM 3

5:18: Edmonton gets one of those goals back as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins rushes into the Caps zone and wires the puck in on a ricochet to make it 6-4. | WSH 6, EDM 4

4:00: Shots on goal are now 19-15 for Washington.

3:44: Kuznetsov gets two minutes for interference, putting the Oilers back on the power play as they attempt to make it a one-goal game.

0.0: Shots on goal after 40 minutes: 19-18 for Washington but Oilers trail by two.

THIRD PERIOD

20:00: Period three is now underway.

15:47: Talbot slides across to make a nice stop on a bang-bang passing play by Washington and keep it a two-goal deficit for Edmonton.

11:39: A penalty to Tom Wilson gives Edmonton their fifth power play of the night. Shots on goal eight minutes in are 2-2.

9:47: With nine seconds left in the Wilson penalty, McDavid was upended breaking into the Washington zone by Jay Beagle. The result was a tripping penalty to Beagle and a brief Oilers two-man advantage.

7:47: Oilers were unable to score on their power play chances.

3:59: Shots are 24-22 Capitals. Andrew Ference receives a holding penalty, sending the Caps on the PP.

3:01: Kuznetsov completed the hat trick, rifling a wrist shot from the right circle past Talbot. | WSH 7, EDM 4

0.0: Game over. Final shot count is 26-23 for Washington. Watch live post-game interviews from the Oilers and Capitals rooms here:
