WATCH: MacT Interview | Daly draws | Bill Scott | McDavid Interview | Actual Lottery
On Mondays, Oilers radio colour analyst and Oilers Now host Bob Stauffer answers questions submitted by fans about the team.
  1. How will the Oilers handle their young talent up front with McDavid (or Eichel) in the fold? What does this mean for Draisaitl, who’s a centre? Is he more likely to play in the AHL or on the wing? — Laura in Red Deer

There a couple of trains of thought on that front: One suggests the Oilers should use the talented Draisaitl as trade bait to address weaknesses on defence and in goal; the other to grow with Draisaitl perhaps playing him on the wing and then at centre over time. Put me in the latter category.

Draisaitl has had a strong playoff with the Kelowna Rockets and people need to look at his NHL numbers and remember that several of the Oilers young forwards struggled offensively until Todd Nelson became Head Coach of the Oilers. Draisaitl didn’t have the opportunity to be offensively “liberated” under Nelson.

  • Bob, you’ve seen McDavid play in person several times. Can you talk about what type of player that he is and what he’ll be able to bring to the Oilers? Which players do you think he’ll mesh best with? — Mike in St. Albert

Connor McDavid is an electrifying tour de force with exceptional leadership skills who is unequivocally a “game changer”.

I am not sure we have seen a draft-eligible player ever show the dazzling display of high speed offensive skills that McDavid possesses.

But, like all great players, he understands the importance of “sharing” the puck.

McDavid is a generational player and combined with 2011 #1 overall pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins would give the Oilers a 1-2 punch down the middle for the next decade-plus.

As for which Oiler McDavid “meshes” best with- I am not sure, but I am sure there are lots of Oilers wingers looking forward to having McDavid aboard.

  • MacTavish said in his end-of-season press conference that he expects next season to be a rebuilding year. Do you think that changes on some level now with the first overall pick coming here? — Duane in Estevan, SK

As stated before, McDavid in my opinion is a “game changer”. He will be an immediate impact player at the NHL level and make everybody else better. That being said, the Oilers have to improve on defence and in goal; and these are areas I am sure that Craig MacTavish will target over the next few months.
