Switzerland scored two unanswered goals and an empty netter, as they remain undefeated in the round-robin tournament.
In the opening minutes of the first period, Swiss goaltender Reto Berra was tested early as Jiri Novotny was all-alone in the slot and tried to shoot it high and glove side but was stopped.
Shortly after, Simon Moser made the spin-o-rama pass to Reto Suri as he tried to go short side but Alexander Salak made the save.
In the other end, Zbynek Irgl had the partial breakaway as he tried to fight off two Swiss defenders but Berra was able to get a piece of it to keep the game scoreless.
With four minutes left in the first, Petr Caslava drew the first penalty of the game for hooking and Switzerland went on the man-advantage.
On the powerplay, Ryan Gardner began the play as he rushed into the zone. He made a pass to Andres Ambuhl and from the slot with the one-timer, he beat Berra to open the scoring.
Just as Switzerland’s powerplay expired in the second, Nino Niederreiter found the back of the net to extend their lead, 2-0.
The Czech Republic tried to pull within one as Jiri Tlusty threw the puck on net and tried to put in his own rebound but Berra made the pad saves and was able to quickly kick it away.
Shortly after, Martin Pluss received an interference penalty to send the Czech Republic on their first powerplay. They were able to capitalize on the man advantage and the Czech Republic pull within one as Jiri Hudler’s shot beat Berra top shelf.
In the last minute of the second period, the Czech Republic was able to tie it up. Hudler was in front and tried to go five-hole but was stopped. He picked up his own rebound and slid it past Berra to score his second of the night.
In the third period, Pluss was able to get the puck out from the corner and tried the wraparound but Salak made the stick save. Moser picked up the rebound in front to put Switzerland up, 3-2.
With five minutes left, Denis Hollenstein made a cross-crease pass to Simon Bodenmann and tipped it past Salak to extend Switzerland’s lead, 4-2.
With 3:12 left in the game, Czech Republic called a timeout to regroup. They also pulled Salak out of net for the extra skater but Suri Reto was able to score an empty netter as Switzerland went on to defeat the Czech Republic, 5-2.
Ladislav Smid was pointless in the game with one shot on net and 24:04 of ice time.
The Czech Republic will have the next two days off and will be back on the ice on Thursday to face Denmark at 8:15 A.M. (MT).-- Wendy Mach, edmontonoilers.com
