(Edmonton, AB) - Oilers Entertainment Group (OEG) announced today that Oilers legend and Hall-of-Fame goaltender Grant Fuhr will be returning as the Honorary Tournament Chair for the Syncrude Oil Country Championship presented by AECON. A returning official event on the Mackenzie Tour - PGA TOUR Canada, the 2nd annual Oil Country Championship will be hosted at Edmonton's Windermere Golf and Country Club from July 31 to August 6, 2017.

"Hockey and golf are two of my biggest passions. I've made a lot of great memories in Oil Country, and this community has been really exceptional to me and my family so the opportunity to serve once again as Tournament Chair for the Oil Country Championship is another privilege for me to experience," said Grant Fuhr. "It will be a fun week to be part of and I'm looking forward to representing Oilers Entertainment Group and not only watching some great golf, but participating in many of the great community events associated with the tournament."
Beyond his role as Honorary Tournament Chair, Fuhr has been given a sponsor exemption and will be competing in the Oil Country Championship and will be around all week playing and attending the various community events. Fuhr will also join a star-studded celebrity lineup in the Celebrity Pro-Am to kick off the tournament week with more details being released at a later date.
"During last year's inaugural Oil Country Championship, Grant Fuhr was an exceptional Honorary Tournament Chair and we're excited to have his support again for our 2nd annual event July 31 to August 6," said OEG CEO and Vice Chair Bob Nicholson. "There's no question that Grant is a great ambassador and friend to Oil Country. Not only has Grant had great success with the Oilers, including five Stanley Cups, he also has a real passion for the game of golf and giving back to the community.

The tournament week will offer a number of family-friendly events and experiences for any golf and sports fan. Kicking off the week, there will be a ticketed event on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 for spectators and guests to enjoy a Celebrity Pro-Am featuring existing Edmonton Oilers players, Oilers Alumni and other sport and entertainment celebrities who will be announced in the coming weeks. This event will be followed by a specialty event, a Celebrity Horse Race, which will see eight teams competing in a fun, crowd-pleasing alternate shot, elimination format that will provide loads of entertainment for all sport fans. Each team will consist of a celebrity and a Mackenzie Tour professional.
The official Oil Country Championship tournament days will run from August 3-6, 2017. Daily tickets can be purchased for $20 or a weekly pass will be available for $75. Children 14 and under will receive complimentary admission. Tickets can be purchased onsite during the tournament week or at OilCountryChampionship.com.
The entire tournament week will be in support of the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF), which continues the legacy of giving back by contributing its resources and financial support to charitable organizations that serve the communities of Northern Alberta. With a focus on education, health and wellness for youth in Oil Country, the EOCF is dedicated to building strong, vibrant and safe communities by demonstrating philanthropic leadership.
This year's beneficiary will see the EOCF donate net tournament funds to the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation in support of its Pediatric Procedure Room. The Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation promotes rehabilitation and provides financial support for the enhancement of patient care, education, research, equipment and technology development at the Glenrose.
Building off last year's inaugural success, the Syncrude Oil Country Championship presented by AECON will require approximately
350 volunteers
, creating a unique opportunity for the community to become engaged. Each volunteer will receive their tournament uniform, meals and snacks during their shift and a volunteer recognition dinner.
