EDMONTON, AB - Connor McDavid recorded his 108th point of the season with the lone goal of the second period to tie a career high in points, but Brady Tkachuk sealed defeat for the Oilers in a 4-3 overtime loss Saturday afternoon to the Ottawa Senators.
The Oilers never led all game, but Colby Cave's third goal of the season with 8:33 remaining in the final frame levelled the score and erased Ottawa's third one-goal lead of the contest.
Tkachuk's winning goal in sudden death ends a five-game slide on the road for Ottawa, who came into today's matinee at Rogers Place last in the NHL standings.

The single point for the Oilers sees the club fall to within six points of the Western Conference's final wild card spot with eight games left in the regular season.
"That point would've been big for us," Leon Draisaitl said. "We couldn't really get too much momentum going for us, and against a team like that who has nothing to lose they're just going to go out and play. It's for sure a lost point for us."
Ottawa went 2-for-2 on the power play in the first period, while the Oilers were limited to only one opportunity with the man advantage that wasn't converted in the final 10 minutes of the game.
"The penalty kill as a whole needs to bear down and really do its job for the team," Cave said post-game. "You take those two goals away and we win the game."
Fortune wasn't in favour of the Oilers early when Brady Tkachuk banked the opening goal on the power play off the foot of Adam Larsson and past Mikko Koskinen from behind the net.
A stretch pass from Darnell Nurse put Alex Chiasson in alone on a breakaway to go forehand to backhand and notch his 21st of the campaign 3:35 later and level the score.
The penalty kill proved costly again for the Oilers, who were 0-for-2 down a man in the opening frame after Thomas Chabot found Bobby Ryan at the back door to restore the visitors' advantage before the break.
Coming into this afternoon's game, the Senators were 1-for-17 on the power play (5.9 percent) in their last eight games.
The dynamic duo of McDavid and Draisaitl were at it again early in the second, working a terrific passing play on a 2-on-1 before the Oilers captain marked his 108th point of the campaign with the equalizing goal to tie his career high.
Zack Kassian factored into the play with the second assist, making it a clean sweep of points for the Oilers top line and extending Kassian's point streak to three games (2G, 1A).

OTT@EDM: McDavid matches career high in points

Former Oiler Magnus Paajarvi provided the set-up needed for the Sens to regain the lead in the third. The Swede elevated his pass over the outstretched defender to the stick of Brian Gibbons, who deflected the puck under the arm of Koskinen 7:37 into the final frame.
But Cave provided the answer almost immediately, ripping a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Craig Anderson 57 seconds later for his third goal of the season. Joe Gambardella added an assist - only his second point in the NHL and second assist in as many games.
The Oilers were given only one power-play opportunity with seven minutes on the clock that ultimately amounted to nothing. They knew, at the conclusion of regulation time, that they'd be at least six points back of the Avalanche with the single point secured heading into sudden death.

McDavid and Draisaitl sold out for the winner by pushing up offensively before the Senators turned the other way through Tkachuk, whose second goal of the game would go down as the winner after his shot dribbled over the line.
The Blue and Orange are back in action at Rogers Place on Tuesday when they entertain the Los Angeles Kings in the third game of a four-game home stand.
