Inside The Oilers Blog
"The resiliency from our team," said Oilers head coach Todd McLellan when asked what he liked most from his squad tonight. "It wasn't a picasso but playing back-to-back against a team that plays with that type of pace. The amount of energy we had to expend on the penalty kill - we'd like to clean that up, obviously - and the number of injuries we had to incur throughout the game. We were scrambling with lines, pairs and that type of stuff. It was a scramble night and we found our way to scratch and claw our way to a win."
Cam Talbot made 34 saves in an outstanding bounce-back performance after being pulled early in Friday's game in Arizona.
"His start last night was tough because he got scored on twice but I think we talked about that already where it wasn't indicative of his play," McLellan remarked. "Tonight he made some tremendous saves on shots that were deflected. I thought he adjusted on one in the third period that was tipped and he had to adjust his body and make a great save. But he exuded some confidence and we played off of that when we needed it."
"It feels pretty darn good," added Talbot. "Heading into a break we knew we needed a good effort, especially against a team that hasn't lost much in this building. They have an unbelievable atmosphere here and obviously we travel pretty well to this place. It's nice to see a lot of orange jerseys in the stands and it was an unbelievable atmosphere there tonight."
After a scoreless opening period, the teams traded goals 1:54 apart midway through the second.
Darnell Nurse skated down the right boards before driving to the net. He fed Pat Maroon in front who backhanded it past Fleury to put the Oilers on the board first eight minutes into the frame.
Less than two minutes later, Vegas got that goal back. Reilly Smith drove to the net, switched from his backhand to his forehand and roofed it over the shoulder of Talbot to tie the game with 10:04 left in the second.

Nugent-Hopkins was hit by Brayden McNabb and went to the dressing room for treatment. Kassian immediately dropped the gloves with McNabb in a quick bout with six minutes to play in the second.
"He took a hit and obviously didn't return," said McLellan of Nugent-Hopkins. "We think he'll be okay coming out of the break."
Edmonton had penalty trouble in this one with Vegas having five power play chances through the first 40 minutes and six power plays overall but penalty killers were perfect.
With six seconds to go in the second, William Karlsson one-timed a shot from the slot past Talbot to put Vegas in front 2-1.
The Oilers made some lineup adjustments due to the Nugent-Hopkins injury. Drake Caggiula was moved to the top line alongside McDavid and Maroon while Draisaitl was shifted into the Nugent-Hopkins spot with Milan Lucic and Jesse Puljujarvi.

Caggiula took advantage of his elevation and wired a shot high on Fleury from the right circle to tie the game up less than four minutes into the third. McDavid registered an assist on the play; his 200th career NHL point.
"The atmosphere was incredible in here," said McDavid. I can't say enough about the fans. Both sides. Knights fans were loud, Oilers fans were even louder. It's good."
At the end of regulation time, shots on goal were 36-29 for Vegas.
Connor McDavid was buzzing around the ice for most of the game, particularly in the opening frame with three shots on goal through 20 minutes.
The massive portion of Oilers fans in the building sang 'Happy Birthday' to McDavid, who was celebrating his 21st birthday on this night, on several occasions starting with midway through the first.
"I only heard about it through the first intermission interview," McDavid said after the game when asked if he heard the singing. "I wish I would have heard it because that's pretty cool. I appreciate the support."
After one, shots on goal were 12-8 for the Oilers.
