"That was a real good comeback on our behalf," said Oilers head coach Todd McLellan. "(We were) a little bit flat at the start but made adjustments between periods. I thought we got harder, more physical, held onto pucks a lot longer and made them play in our end.
"As a result, we didn't have to defend as much and it paid off."
Tyler Pitlick got injured early in the third period and the Oilers adjusted by moving Nugent-Hopkins to the line with Maroon and Draisaitl and the trio enjoyed success.
"When Leon got together with Nuge and Patty Maroon, held onto pucks down low and made it hard for the (other) team, those are all real good signs for us. Tyler Pitlick, before he got hurt, was a catalyst in creating some physicality and energy. We'll miss him," McLellan added.
The Oilers head coach stated that it was also great to see Maroon score in front of his family in his hometown, among other storylines including Kris Russell playing his 600th career game against his former team.
"There's a lot of stories here. Kris Russell coming back, our team coming into the building (without a lot of success) and Patty Maroon. I know his little guy was at the game today. It's nice for Patty to get the goal. I'm sure the little one was jumping up and down like he should be."
Maroon echoed the thoughts of his coach.
"It was good. Especially playing in front of the team I grew up watching. We had season tickets. You always get up for these games, no matter what. It's fun to play your hometown team. To get a goal is an extra bonus for me, especially in front of my son and my family."
Oilers netminder Cam Talbot came up with a huge stop early in the game, gloving a blast from in-close by Jori Lehtera during a scramble in front of the Oilers net.
The Blues had another chance to score just over a minute later and this time they converted. A turnover at the blueline resulted in the puck on the stick of Kyle Brodziak. Brodziak didn't get a lot on his shot but enough to sneak by low glove side on Talbot and open the scoring.
Edmonton replied with 8:16 to go in the first. Leon Draisaitl won the draw right to Tyler Pitlick who wired a wrist shot past Blues starting goaltender Carter Hutton, knotting the game up at 1-1.
However, 33 seconds later, St. Louis pulled back in front again. Robby Fabbri's initial shot was stopped by Talbot, but it left the Oilers netminder off balance. Vladimir Tarasenko picked up the rebound and put it into the open cage to make it 2-1.
