EDMONTON, AB - Carter Savoie isn't scoring literally every night like he did for the first five games of his NCAA career, but he's still among the top freshmen in the NCAA.
The Oilers 2020 fourth-round (100th overall) draft pick tallied his ninth of the season on Saturday as his University of Denver Pioneers beat the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks 4-1.
The 19-year-old from St. Albert is tied for the National Collegiate Hockey Conference lead in goals among freshmen with Veeti Miettinen of the St. Cloud State University Huskies. Matthew Kopperud of the Arizona State University Sun Devils leads all NCAA rookies with 12 goals.
Savoie has averaged nearly a point per game with five assists to go along with his nine goals for 14 points in 15 appearances, one year removed from scoring 53 goals and 46 assists in 54 games with the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.
The Pioneers and Mavericks will square off again on Sunday in Omaha.
