EDMONTON, AB -Quite the first impression for Matvey Petrov.
The Oilers 2021 sixth-round draft pick scored three times in his Ontario Hockey League debut on Thursday, leading the North Bay Battalion to a 7-4 win over the Peterborough Petes.
The 18-year-old was selected 180th overall by Edmonton during July's NHL Draft after tallying 22 goals and 20 assists in 58 games with MHK Krylia Sovetov in the Russian junior league.
Petrov was the first-overall selection in the 2020 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft but was unable to play for the Battalion last year due to the pandemic wiping out the entire OHL season.
He attended Oilers Rookie Camp last month before getting returned to North Bay on Sept. 25. Petrov also competed for Russia at the 2021 World Under-18 Championship in Texas.
