FUTURE WATCH | Mixing it up with Marino

It was a moment in time John Marino will never forget.

When the 6-foot-2 defenceman heard his name called out in the sixth round of the 2015 NHL Draft, becoming the 154th-overall pick by the Edmonton Oilers, it took a moment for it to register with him.

“It was kind of a shock,” said Marino.

“It was just surreal to have that feeling of being in the draft, having your name called. You know that it’s all paid off and you’re one step closer.”

At the time of the Oilers selection of the right-shot rear-guard, Marino had been playing with the U.S. Premier Hockey League (USPHL) South Shore Kings for the past three seasons.

During the 2014-15 season with South Shore, Marino played in 49 games and scored four goals, adding 24 assists.

The 18-year-old also had a chance to compete at the Oilers development camp after being drafted this summer.

“It was pretty incredible to be drafted by such a highly prestigious organization. I know it’s a great hockey city and the new coaching staff is great as well, so it was an honour,” said Marino.

A smooth-skating defenceman, Marino considers himself to be a smart playmaker on the ice.

“I’d say I’m quick at transitions, — going from backwards to forwards — going to get the puck in the corners, (bringing a) higher intensity for sure, and (making) quicker decisions overall.”

But with reward comes hard work, and Marino isn’t naïve to the process. The defenceman uses a variety of tools at his disposal to enhance his on-ice skill set.

“Coach uses video (we can review) a couple of times a week… and whenever you’re watching one of the NHL games, you pick out your favourite defenceman, whoever it’d be…and I see what they do and you try to mirror what they do on the ice.”

The Brockton, MA native was ranked 63rd among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting and listed as a top-100 prospect by International Scouting Services.

The 18-year-old is currently playing his first season with the Tri-City Storm in the United States Hockey League (USHL), acquired in the offseason from the Chicago Steel for a third-round pick in Phase II of the 2016 USHL Entry Draft.

“The season’s been good so far,” said Marino.

“It’s going pretty well. We were off to a hot start. We’ve kind of trailed off a little bit, but I don’t think that’s going to be an issue.”

The Tri-City Storm began its regular season with a strong 5-1 victory against the Omaha Lancers in September.

Marino was named CCM Defenceman of the Week by the USHL after earning three assists in the season opener. He tied with the Bloomington Thunder’s Jeremy Davies for the most points by a defenceman in the league.

“I think we’ll pick up right where we left off. We’ve got a great group of guys so I don’t see us getting into too much trouble,” said the first-year Storm defenceman.

“We have great goaltending — two of the best goaltenders in the league — and our forwards are really reliable. I think we’re going to be able to shut down the top goal scorers, whoever we’re playing, and allow the fewest against, so I think that’s going to be important down the stretch.”

Focused on the season ahead with the Storm, the defenceman is also preparing to play collegiately next year, having already committed to Harvard University.

“I know a couple of the guys on the team already, and I know the coach very well — (Ted Donato)’s a great guy,” said Marino.

“It’s also pretty close to home and I know it’s a great environment to play hockey in. It’s a very prestigious school as well, so it’s kind of the best of both worlds.”
