Edmonton, AB – On January 22, 2010, the Edmonton Oilers and EPCOR will welcome Canadian Olympic Champion, Adam van Koeverden, to Rexall Place as part of the EPCOR Parade of Champions during the Oilers game versus the Dallas Stars.  Adam will participate in the honour guard and sign autographs on the concourse during the second intermission.

“Adam van Koeverden is a true Olympic champion that exemplifies everything it takes to be a great Canadian athlete, both on and off the water,” said Patrick LaForge, Oilers President and CEO. “This outstanding partnership with EPCOR gives us the opportunity to showcase one of Canada’s finest athletes and share their story with our fans.”

Growing up in Oakville, ON and training at the Burloak Club, Adam van Koeverden began kayaking at a young age. During his first Olympic appearance in Athens, Greece, Adam became one of Canada’s brightest stars and Canada’s first double medalist in years, winning a gold medal in the K1 500m and a bronze medal in the K1 1000m.

“EPCOR and the Oilers are very pleased to have Adam van Koeverden visit Rexall Place as part of the EPCOR Parade of Champions,” said Leigh-Anne Palter, VP, Public & Government Affairs, EPCOR. “Adam has had tremendous success in the Olympics and on the World Circuit and we are proud to support Canadian Olympians, like Adam, who work so hard to reach their goals and represent our country on the world stage.

Since his Olympic debut in 2004, van Koeverden has dominated the World Cup circuit, winning the overall title each year from 2004 to 2007 and securing the 2007 World Championships in record time. Throughout his career, he has won 21 World Cup gold medals and is a 55-time Canadian Champion.

Off the water, Adam van Koeverden is active with the David Suzuki Foundation and is also an athlete ambassador for the athlete-driven, humanitarian organization Right to Play, a group that comes to the aid of disadvantaged youth with sport and activity.

EPCOR will be giving out a special edition Go Canada Go car flag to the first 1000 fans who arrive at Friday’s game. Limited seats remain available for the January 22 Oilers versus Stars match up when van Koeverden visits Rexall Place, visit to purchase seats.
