Edmonton, AB – On December 21, 2009, the Edmonton Oilers and EPCOR will welcome two-time Olympic gold medalist, Sami Jo Small, to Rexall Place as part of the EPCOR Parade of Champions during the Oilers game versus the St Louis Blues. Sami Jo will participate in the Honour Guard and sign autographs on the concourse during the second intermission.
“Sami Jo Small has been a driving force behind Canadian women’s hockey and the Oilers are pleased to welcome her to Rexall Place for the Parade of Champions,” said Patrick LaForge, Oilers President and CEO. “This meaningful partnership with EPCOR is allowing us to showcase one of Canada’s finest athletes who is headed to Vancouver this February to represent our country.”
Growing up on the outdoor hockey rinks in Winnipeg, MB, Sami Jo showed her passion and determination at a young age when she proved her hockey skills in the boy’s minor hockey league. Years later Sami Jo fulfilled her lifelong dream of going to Olympics when she earned a spot on the 1998 Canadian Olympic team. Now she is leading Canadians Women’s Hockey as a three time Olympian with two Olympic Gold medals to her credit. She has also won five World Championships and has been named Championship MVP twice.
“EPCOR and the Oilers are very proud to have Sami Jo Small participate in our Parade of Champions,” said Leigh-Anne Palter, VP, Public and Government Affairs, EPCOR. “Sami Jo has made a tremendous impact on Women’s Hockey here in Canada and she proves to be a great role model for young girls playing hockey.”
Sami Jo Small played a major role in starting the Canadian Women’s Hockey League where she currently plays elite hockey for the Mississauga Chiefs. She also runs her own female hockey school and works as a professional keynote motivational speaker.
