The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation announced today that $209,222 was raised in support of charity at the Celebrating #11 - Mark Messier: An Oil Country Homecoming gala, presented by Rexall in association with COLD-fX. The event, held at the Winspear Centre on Monday, February 26th, gave hockey fans an opportunity to salute Mark Messier for his contribution to his hometown, and his accomplishments as an Oiler. Half of the net proceeds, a figure of $104,611, will be donated to the Alberta Lung Association, a charity that Mark supported during his years as an Oiler, on behalf of the EOCF and Mark Messier.
"When we first joined forces with Mark Messier to put together a charity gala at the Winspear Centre, our hope was to reinvest a substantial amount of money back into the community," said Darryl Lindenbach, Executive Director of the EOCF. "With the overwhelming support of hockey fans throughout Oil Country, we were able to stage one of the most successful events in the Winspear Centres history, and raise over $200,000 for charity."
"After all these years, it was great to reconnect with Mark Messier, and to be involved with such a first-class fundraiser with the Edmonton Oilers," said Tony Hudson, President & CEO of the Alberta Lung Association. "Mark was a leader as an Edmonton Oiler, and provided great support for the Lung Association. We thank Mark Messier, the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation, and hockey fans everywhere for their support of the battle against lung disease in our community."
The total impact of Mark Messier's homecoming visit was considerable. In excess of $500,000 was raised and donated to Oil Country charities through the Gala, merchandise and memorabilia sales, a variety of auctions, including the hugely successful Copper Jackets auction in support of the Christmas Bureau, and the Oilers 50/50 draw.
