On a night when the Edmonton Oilers have already clinched a playoff spot to battle for the Stanley Cup for the 20th time in the teams history, the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation also surpassed a major milestone that speaks volumes about the generosity of local hockey fans by generating over $2 million dollars through 50/50 sales in one season!
Each game, the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation and the hockey club makes available a maximum of $60,000 in 50/50 tickets for fans to purchase. With the pot split evenly between a single winner and the participating charity or minor hockey association, an average of $22,439 was awarded each night at Oilers home games this season, for a total of over $1 million dollars in winnings!
"It has been an amazing year for 50/50 sales," said Gillian Andries, Executive Director of the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation. "The support of our fans allows us to assist many great charities, and the efforts that they undertake to make our community a better place to live. Plus it allows the Oilers an opportunity to support minor hockey at the grassroots level, and help it grow across Alberta."
Some of the charities that have benefited from the Oilers record breaking 50/50 sales this season include Kids With Cancer, Sports Central, the Boys & Girls Club, Youth Emergency Shelter, the Edmonton Minor Hockey Association, and numerous rural hockey associations.
