Minnesota opened the scoring 5:57 into the first period to start things off. Mikko Koivu skated along the right side-boards before finding Mark Parrish in the high slot. Parrish one-timed a shot through the five-hole past Markkanen.
With just over a minute to go in the first, Keith Carney created a turnover at the blueline and because the Oilers were in the middle of a line change, he had a clear path through the neutral zone straight through to the Oilers end.
Carney elected to shoot blocker side and beat Markkanen high to double the Wild lead to 2-0.
Shots on goal after one were 12-5 for Minnesota.
Edmonton had a chance early in the second to get a goal back as both Pouliot and Torres whacked at a loose puck at the top of the crease but couldn't solve Backstrom.
However, they did draw a penalty on the play as Brent Burns slashed at Raffi Torres. Rob Schremp saw some time on the first power play unit but the Oilers were unable to get anything set up.
Going back the other way, Minnesotahad a chance of their own. Pierre-Marc Bouchard's initial shot from the point was stopped in front by Markkanen but the rebound went straight to Brian Rolston. Rolston had a wide-open net but rang it off the near post.
An ugly two-on-one between Rolston and Bouchard several minutes later also almost resulted in a goal. Rolston threw the puck across the slot to Bouchard who tried to slip the puck past a sliding Markkanen. The Oilers netminder was able to get a blocker on it.
Minnesota finally struck for their third of the game midway through the second. Wes Walz threaded a pass through the neutral zone right on the stick of Marian Gaborik. Gaborik made no mistake on his breakaway, deking out the Oilers netminder for the goal.
After two, shots were 22-15 for the Wild.
Zack Stortini did some agitating in the third and was able to goad Wild enforcer Derek Boogaard into a penalty. The Oilers had a number of chances on the power play with Stortini rewarded with second-unit time.
Marian Gaborik almost made it 4-0 just past the midway point but his shot attempt rang off the post behind Markkanen.
The Oilers made one last-ditch attempt to foil the shutout bid but could not solve Backstrom.
