LOWDOWN: The type of high end, explosive offensive talent worthy of a top selection. Goal scoring and dynamic offense is impossible to teach, making players like this a valuable and extremely rare commodity.
Columbus Blue Jackets
Filip Forsberg, RW, Leksand (SWE)
LOWDOWN: A safe pick for a team with an atrocious 1st round draft history. I don't think Columbus needs to take a defenseman and I don't think they want to gamble on a Russian, so this solid Swede with a very complete game is a nice match.
Alex Galchenyuk, LW/C, Sarnia (OHL)
LOWDOWN: I firmly believe a healthy Galchenyuk would have been in the conversation for 1st overall. The questions about the health of his knee seem to be answered positively, and his tremendous playmaking ability down the middle speaks for itself.
New York Islanders
Ryan Murray, D, Everett (WHL)
LOWDOWN: I don't think Murray has the highest upside of the defensemen in the draft, but he's ready to play now and he's a safe bet to play for a long time. The Islanders need help organizationally at the defense position and this is a perfect match.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Radek Faksa, C, Kitchener (OHL)
LOWDOWN: This big Czech loves to score and uses his size well. A perfect fit for a Maple Leafs team that needs more size inside its top 6.
Mathew Dumba, D, Red Deer (WHL)
LOWDOWN: Huge shot, loves to hit, moves the puck very well.
Mikhail Grigorenko, C, Quebec (QMJHL)
LOWDOWN: His skill isn't in question, but his work ethic and determination are. Worth a gamble for a team that needs help scoring.
Morgan Rielly, D, Moose Jaw (WHL)
LOWDOWN: Another player whose rankings were affected by a knee injury, Rielly can move the puck at an elite level with his passing and skating.
Griffin Reinhart, D, Edmonton (WHL)
LOWDOWN: Made the WHL look easy in his draft year. Seems to be able to slow the game down with his efficiency, though questions about his desire to be physical hurt his rankings.
Tampa Bay Lightning
Cody Ceci, D, Ottawa (OHL)
LOWDOWN: Kept rising all season as his point totals climbed. Offensive defenseman with good size.
Washington Capitals (via COL)
Brendan Gaunce, C, Belleville (OHL)
LOWDOWN:A big centerman who protects the puck very well and is a natural scorer.
Jacob Trouba, D, USNTDP (USHL)
LOWDOWN: Good size, excellent defensively, is a prototypical shut-down defenseman.
Teuvo Teravainen, LW, Jokerit (FIN-JR)
LOWDOWN:Has an unbelievable skill level, but is very undersized.
Olli Maatta, D, London (OHL)
LOWDOWN:Can't believe some lists I'm seeing have him in the 20's. Excellent size, good first pass and reliable defensively. A solid, complete package.
Matthew Finn, D, Guelph (OHL)
LOWDOWN: Can quarterback a powerplay and excel in a shutdown role, plus he's willing to muck it up.
Derrick Pouliot, D, Portland (WHL)
LOWDOWN: Skates well, moves the puck efficiently, isn't afraid to scrap.
San Jose Sharks
Sebastien Collberg, RW, Frolunda (SWE-JR)
LOWDOWN: Natural goal scorer with a right-handed shot and a lightning release.
Oscar Dansk, G, Brynas (SWE)
LOWDOWN: Not a huge fan of goalies in the first round, but there are some good ones this year and I think Dansk is the best. Good size, poised to be the starter for Sweden's WJHC team.
Tampa Bay Lightning (via DET)
Pontus Aberg, LW, Djurgardens (SWE)
LOWDOWN: Excellent size with ridiculous numbers in the Swedish junior league. Will now continue to develop playing against men.
Malcom Subban, G, Belleville (OHL)
LOWDOWN: Brash like his brother, a team will need to have patience as he develops, but he's got tremendous athletic ability. The Flyers would be wise to gamble on developing a home grown goalie with a personality that fits their market.
Buffalo Sabres (via NSH)
Tomas Hertl, C, Slavia (CZE)
LOWDOWN: High hockey IQ and a natural offensive talent.
Zemgus Girgensons, C, Dubuque (USHL)
LOWDOWN: Built solidly and totally mean, with a bit of skill. Will excel in a bottom 6 NHL role.
Henrik Samuelsson, LW, Edmonton (WHL)
LOWDOWN: Boots are a little heavy, but he finds a way to get there. Not a natural finisher, but enough grease to get the job done effectively and an unpredictable mean streak.
Andrei Vasilevski, G, Ufa Tolpar (RUS-JR)
LOWDOWN: Didn't start the gold medal game for Russia in the WJHC but was a stud the whole tournament before Canada lit him up for 5. Excellent size, will develop overseas playing against men.
St. Louis Blues
Tanner Pearson, LW, Barrie (OHL)
LOWDOWN: Passed over in two prior drafts, this kid can score. If he's a late bloomer, he's a steal here. If he's reached his ceiling, he'll be a career minor leaguer. Worth the gamble late in round 1.
Emil Lundberg, LW, Sodertalje (SWE)
LOWDOWN: Power winger with a nose for the net, scores the garbage goals.
Nicolas Kerdiles, F, USA U-18 (USHL)
LOWDOWN: Good size and willingness to use it combined with tremendous speed. Questions about consistency.
New York Rangers
Brady Skjei, D, USA U-18 (USHL)
LOWDOWN:Often referred to as the best skater amongst defensemen in the draft, he's a big man that moves like the wind. He needs to use his size better, but his tools are tremendous.
New Jersey Devils
Colton Sissons, RW, Kelowna (WHL)
LOWDOWN: Total offensive package, dynamic player with late developing size.
Los Angeles Kings
Ludvig Bystrom, D, Modo (SEL)
LOWDOWN: Very good skater with a solid first pass, lacking the consistency and good decision making to be rated higher.
