Cogliano selected for NHL Youngstars game

Edmonton Oilers forward Andrew Cogliano is one of 10 players named today to the NHL Sophomores roster for the NHL YoungStars Game to be played at the Bell Centre in Montreal on Saturday, January 24th as part of the NHL All-Star Weekend.


The NHL YoungStars Game presented by Upper Deck will showcase the best of the League's young talent. The 10-player sophomore and rookie teams will face off as part of the 2009 Honda/NHL SuperSkills (5:00 p.m. MST on CBC, RDS and VERSUS).

This marks the sixth consecutive YoungStars Game at All-Star Weekend and the first under the sophomores versus rookies format.

The YoungStars players were selected by the NHL’s Hockey Operations Department and the NHL Players' Association in consultation with League General Managers.

This will be Cogliano’s first appearance in the NHL YoungStars Game. The Edmonton forward becomes the eighth Oiler to appear in the game since it was first played as part of the NHL All-Star Game in 2001-02 at Los Angeles. He joins Mike Comrie (2001-02), Ales Hemsky (2002-03, selected but did not play due to injury), Shawn Horcoff (2002-03, replaced Hemsky), Alexei Semenov and Raffi Torres (2003-04), Ladislav Smid (2006-07) and Sam Gagner (2007-08) as Oilers to have played or been selected to the game.

Cogliano is currently fifth in scoring on the Oilers with 12-9-21 in 39 games He is tied with Sheldon Souray for the team lead in goals with 12 and is fourth on the roster with three powerplay goals. Now in his second season in Edmonton, Cogliano has played 121 games with the Oilers, scoring 30-36-66 with 30 penalty minutes.
