With gum drops, icing and gingerbread cookies, Christmas must be in the air; and to kick-off their 2009 campaign, the Christmas Bureau of Edmonton held a gingerbread house contest. On November 16th, at the Winspear Centre many community groups came together to compete to see who can make the best gingerbread house and to launch the Christmas Bureau’s campaign. This year, the Christmas Bureau is looking to raise $1.6 million to provide a festive meal to people less fortunate.
“The sharing of Christmas has become an incredible and magical tradition here in Edmonton”, said Kevin Lowe, President of Hockey Operations. “I have been here in Edmonton with the Oilers for about 30 years and I have been involved with the Christmas Bureau for that entire time”.
For 69 years, the Christmas Bureau of Edmonton has brought corporate and private citizens together to raise over $1 million annually and to ensure that less fortunate Edmontonians have a festive meal each year during Christmas time. The Oilers Ladies have also joined Kevin Lowe in this mission for over 20 years and together they have raised thousands of dollars for the Christmas Bureau through various fundraising events including Shirts of your Back and Online charitable auctions. This year they will they will be serving in their 9th year as Honourary Campaign Co-Chairs and the Bureau will pay a tribute to them at the FMC Christmas Bureau Breakfast sponsored by Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP, Sobeys and the Westin Hotel.
“The Oilers Ladies are proud to be a part of the Christmas Bureau”, said Cindy Horcoff. “We are very thankful to have been asked to be Honourary Co-Chairs for the Bureau again this year and we could not have done this without our tremendous support here in Oil Country.”
New this year, the Oilers Ladies and the EOCF are giving their support through the Ornaments of Hope fundraiser. On December 19th, when the Oilers take on Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals, the Oilers Ladies will be selling limited edition hand autographed Oilers Christmas ornaments. Ornaments of Hope are $20 each and proceeds will benefit the Christmas Bureau of Edmonton and the EOCF.
The FMC Christmas Bureau Breakfast will take place on December 17th from 7:00 am to 8:30 am at the Westin Hotel and tickets are $65 each. To purchase tickets, please phone 780-423-7385.
