Canada, Sweden advance to semis

by Jen Sharpe / Edmonton Oilers
Six Oilers players and one Oilers prospect are suiting up for their respective countries at the IIHF World Championships in Switzerland from April 24 to May 10.

In Thursday's quarterfinals, Shawn Horcoff, Dwayne Roloson, and the rest of Team Canada defeated Latvia 4-2 to advance to the semifinals. Horcoff registered three shots in 15:23 on the ice.

To determine Canada's semi-final foe, Sweden took on the Czech Republic in the following game. Oilers prospect Linus Omark posted one shot and two penalty minutes for Sweden in their 3-1 victory, while Oilers forwards Ales Hemsky and Ales Kotalik tallied two and three shots respectively in what would be their final game of the tournament.

Canada and Sweden will face off Friday, May 8 at 12:15pm MDT. Earlier that day at 8:15am MDT, Oilers Denis Grebeshkov and Patrick O'Sullivan will battle eachother in the first semifinal between Russia and USA.
