The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenceman Kris Russell to a four-year contract extension.
Russell, 30, appeared in 68 games with the Oilers last season, posting 13 points (1G, 12A) and 23 penalty minutes. He led the NHL with 213 blocked shots and also recorded 67 hits. Russell also averaged 21:13 minutes of ice time per game, ranking third on the team.

The 5'10", 170-pound defenceman has led the league in blocked shots two of the past three seasons and finished second in the NHL in 2015-16. Russell also led the league with 283 blocked shots in 2014-15. On March 6, 2015, he set an NHL record with 15 blocked shots in one game, against Boston.

The Caroline, Alberta native has accumulated 190 points (39G, 151A) and 210 penalty minutes in 641 career NHL games.
Russell has represented Canada on five occasions, winning gold twice at the World Junior Hockey Championship (2006, 2007), and playing at the World Hockey Championship in 2010 and 2012.
Russell was the Calgary Flames 2015 nominee for the Bill Masterton Trophy, awarded annually to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.
