Bob Stauffer's 2015 Mock Draft

by Bob Stauffer / Edmonton Oilers

Related mock drafts: Tom Gazzola | Bob Stauffer | Jack Michaels | Chris Wescott
1 EDM Connor McDavid, C, Erie (OHL) People have called McDavid the next Crosby or the next Gretzky. That's an unfair comparison for an 18-year-old. Connor McDavid is going to be the first Connor McDavid. It's going to be fun watching his impact on the Oilers in the future.
2 BUF Jack Eichel, C, Boston University (NCAA) One helluva consolation prize for Tim Murray and the Sabres. I believe Eichel will be the best American player in hockey within five years.
3 PHX Dylan Strome, C, Erie (OHL)
I know a lot of experts have Noah Hanifin here, but I take the C over the D all day long. Strome led the OHL in scoring and needs work on his footwork but at 6’3” could be a dominant center for an organization light in that position for years to come.
4 TOR Ivan Provorov, D, Brandon (WHL) Provorov plays an incredibly mature game on the back end for Brandon and I believe he has a bigger upside than Hanifin.
5 CAR Noah Hanifin, D, Boston College (NCAA) Somewhat comparable to Edmonton native Jay Bouwmeester by all reports, I do think this is a pick the ‘Canes might swap to immediately improve their team.
6 NJD Mitchell Marner, RW, London (OHL)
The Devils are hurting for scorers and Marner might turn out to be Patrick Kane-lite.
7 PHI Lawson Crouse, LW, Kingston (OHL) The Flyers have deviated away from the Broadstreet Bullies’ ways and yes the game has changed, but Crouse can play and projects no worse than a 2nd line power-forward IMO.
8 CBJ Zack Werenski, D, Michigan (NCAA) Everybody assumes the Blue Jackets will draft a “D”. Werenski is the next best on the list.
9 SJS Pavel Zacha, C, Sarnia (OHL) Zacha is a very impressive physical specimen who might have gone higher if he played a full season, he might be able to play next season.
10  Mikko Rantanen, RW, (SM Liiga) The Avs have skill with the likes of Nathan McKinnon and Matt Duchene, Rantanen is a big body who can make plays.
11 FLA Timo Meier, RW, Halifax (QMJHL) The Panthers have Sasha Barkov and Nick Bjugstad down the middle so the high-scoring Meier gives them a sniper to join Jonathan Huberdeau on the wing.
12 DAL Mathew Barzal, C, Seattle (WHL) Like Zacha, Barzal’s injuries played a factor in him dropping a bit, but he is perfectly slotted as a #2 C IMO.
13 Kyle Connor, C, Youngstown (USHL) Prolific scorer out of the USHL.
14 Colin White, C, US U-18 (USHL) Many think the Bruins might target Jakub Zboril here but I think the hometown boy is too hard to pass up.
15 CGY Joel Eriksson Ek, C, Farjestad (Sweden) This guy is NOT a reach here. Take a look where Craig Button has him ranked. Rangy Swedish C like Bengt Gustafsson.
16 EDM
(From PIT)
Evgeny Svechnikov, LW, Cape Breton (QMJHL) Many think the Oilers will target G Ilya Samsonov. Too early to take a goalie IMO. Svechnikov is a big Russian winger who played a little bit at center late in the season. Has tremendous energy.
17 WPG Nick Merkley, RW, Kelowna (WHL) Merkley had a strong post-season for the Kelowna Rockets and the Jets have never shied away from smaller, skilled players provided that they are competitive.
18 Travis Konecny, C, Ottawa (OHL) Sens go with 67’s product. Saw him play vs. Belleville this season. Competitive and skilled but a tad under-sized.
19 DET Jakub Zboril, D, Saint John (QMJHL) He might go higher but if he goes to the Red Wings he will spend some time “percolating.”
20 Paul Bittner, LW, Portland (WHL) Portland Winterhawks power-forward benefitted greatly playing with Oliver Bjorkstad and Nicolas Petan, but Wild can’t pass on home-grown product.
21 BUF
(From BUF)
Jacob Larsson, D, Frolunda (Sweden) I think this pick is in play but my guess is the Sabres look to add to their D.
22 WSH Denis Guryanov, RW, Togliatti 2 (Russia) The Capitals have never been shy of drafting Russians and they can afford to wait while he puts his time in the KHL.
23 VAN Jeremy Roy, D, Sherbrooke (QMJHL) The Canucks have a lot of young forward prospects coming and need to replace their aging D.
24 TOR
(From NSH)
Jake DeBrusk, LW, Swift Current (WHL) Late-bloomer reminds me a bit of the Leafs Joffrey Lupul, who shot up the ranks during his draft year as well.
25 WPG
(From STL via BUF)
Oliver Kylington, D, Farjestad (Sweden) This is an extra pick for the Jets as part of the Evander Kane trade and Winnipeg takes a wild swing on a kid who could go between 25 to 45.
26 MTL Thomas Chabot, D, Saint John (QMJHL) Skilled, offensive D out of the Q goes to the Habs.
27 ANA Brock Boeser, RW, Waterloo (USHL) Ducks always seem to make them count don’t they?
(From NYR)
Daniel Sprong, RW, Charlottetown (QMJHL) Another skilled forward, who can really skate.
29 PHI
(From TBL)
Brandon Carlo, D, Tri-City (WHL) Flyers continue to add to their young D of the future which includes Samuel Morin on Travis Sanheim from the last two drafts.
30 PHX
(From CHI)
Gabriel Carlsson, D, Linkoping Jr. (Sweden) Hulking D will be groomed slowly.
31 BUF Mackenzie Blackwood, G, Barrie (OHL) Big goaltender goes somewhere between 29 to 35 IMO.
32 PHX Jansen Harkins, C, Prince George (WHL) Dependable all-around player projects to second/third line C.
33 EDM Ilya Samsonov, G, Magnitogorsk (MHL) Wishful thinking? Will spend some time in KHL.
